Organized in 1870. County seat Mankato. Named in honor of Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis R. Jewell, Sixth Kansas Cavalry, who died November 30, 1862, of wounds received in the battle of Cane Hill, Ark. November 28, 1862.

William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Jewell County.
