In memory of Jesse L. Reno, Captain United States
army, and Major-General of Volunteers, who was
killed in battle Sept. 14, 1862, at South
Mountain, Md.

The huge courthouse was completed in 1931 and was designed by architect William Earl Hulse.
Hutchinson was the western end of the Arkansas Valley Interurban
which conected Wichita, Newton, Halstead, Burrton, and Hutchinson.
One of the rail lines that served Hutchinson was the
Hutchinson & Southern,
a remarkable railroad built by a group of Kansas
businessmen without spending any of their own money.
It later became part of the A.T.&S.F.
William G. Cutler's
History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about
early Reno County.
There is a section on Reno County in the book
Kansas: a Cyclopedia Of State History
by Frank Blackmar (1912).

Special Places in Reno County
- Elmer has shrunk to a few houses and an abandoned metal elevator
near where highways 17 and 96 intersect.
Special Events in Reno County
- The Kansas State Fair at Hutchinson every fall is the real thing. From the miniature train to the swine barn, from corny dogs to Our Lady of Guadalupe Mexican food, it's all there.
- Pretty Prairie shows classic films in the park and in their historic Civic Theatre downtown.
- Every July, Pretty Prairie hosts "Kansas Largest Night Rodeo."
