FITZSIMONS, posted by Tom Fitzsimons on Thursday, July 29, 2004: I just learned that Fitzsimons Army Hospital was named for William T. Fitzsimons, the first casualty of World War I. He was 28 years old at the time he was killed in France in 1917. He was born in Burlington in 1889 according to the biography on the University of Kansas site. "First KIA. Dr. William T. Fitzsimons was a 1912 graduate from the KU School of Medicine. Shortly after World War I broke out in August 1914, he volunteered his services to the Allied cause and spent over a year treating the wounded at hospitals in England and Belgium. After the US officially entered the conflict, Fitzsimmons returned to active duty in July 1917 and was commissioned a first lieutenant. Barely two months later, he was killed during a German air attack on his field hospital in France, becoming KU's (and America's) first official casualty of the war."

FLINT, KELLER, posted by Diana Hale on Thursday, August 12, 2004: Two Flint sisters in my husband's ancestry, Dilly Jane and Waty Ann married Paul Keller, b. 1832 in al Sac Loren Terr. Prior to marriage with Waty Ann (Flint) Tomlinson, Paul had married a Virginia, probably in Illinois. Have a lot of Flint info to exchange and wouldn't mind learning more. Their sister, Josephine Flint married James Russell Garrett and is buried there in Burlington at Stringtown Cem. They previously were in Anderson County, KS and before that Kankakee Co, Ill. The girls' father, Lyman B. Flint, had been married to Huldah O. (Lewis). Waty Ann, Dilly Jane and Paul Keller are all buried at Graceland Cem. in Burlington.

Bryan, son is Marion A. Bryan, Marion Bryan married Emma Ward in Coffey County and raised children in Leroy until the early 1900's. Cathy

WITHERS, posted by Richard Perry on Saturday, September 25, 2004: The 1880 Federal Census shows Cyrus Withers, wife Augusta (Bean) and children William H., Charles C., Mary H., Minnie and Samuel residing in the town of Burlington. The family then seems to vanish from the record. Except for Charles who returned to Gaston county, NC, (where the family originally came from) to marry in 1885 and die in 1891. Any information on the rest of the family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

LEAVENS, posted by C. Jo Sehl on Friday, October 8, 2004: On the 1900 Federal Census, I am finding a Fred Leavens living with a family named Pavenmire. He is 15 years old, is listed as "hired" and attending school. Are there any records of school students at this time frame??? Am searching for the parents of this child.

HOW, HAWKINS, posted by Bob Hawkins on Monday, October 11, 2004: Looking for info on the Charles C. How family. Charles married Hannah Priced in Mahaska County Iowa in 1851. They came to Coffey County about 1869. Daughter Isabella married Fielding Hawkins. Isabella was a school teacher.

SHELTON, posted by Wayne P. Wooten on Wednesday, November 24, 2004: Looking for the burial site of my gggrandmother Nancy Ann SHELTON. She died 11 Mar., 1874 in Coffey County and is buried, according to affidavits that I have from John Shelton's Mexican War pension file, she was buried very close to Gridley, possibly in the Gridley Cemetery. Nancy's son Morris Shelton's' affidavit said that she was buried in a "county graveyard."
