Hello!

My name is Jackie Wilson Smith, the volunteer administrator of both the Mailing List and the Message Boards for Graham County, Kansas.

For general information about mailing lists, try visiting RootsWeb's FAQ.

The Mailing List is focused on the exchange of genealogy information and research related to Graham County. Other genealogy related items (such as useful postal addresses, web-sites, news, etc.) are always welcome. Gayle Garrett, the county coordinator, uses the list to notify everyone of updates to the Graham County Kansas Genealogy site as I do for updates on the Message Boards. New messages posted on the Message board are immediately copied in full to the mailing list. Gatewayed messaged are easy to identify because they begin with:

"This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list"

and include a URL to take you directly to the post. However, the authors of these posts are not necessarily subscribers to the mailing list, so it is best to respond on the board.

Modes

There are two list modes:

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

To subscribe click on the mode you prefer (or copy the address into the "To" field of a blank message), and type the word Subscribe in the body of the message. Turn off any signature or tag-line file normally used. Then send the message. Within 24 hours you will receive a Welcome message, which contains not only the addresses on this page, but also the guidelines for the list.

To unsubscribe, follow the instructions above, except type the word Unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Posting a Message

Address your message to KSGRAHAM-L@rootsweb.com Type the message, being sure to include all pertinent dates, locations and names, of course. Then send it! It really is that easy. All subscribers (including you) of both mail modes will receive a copy of your message. Although this is a closed list, any valid posting received from a non-subscriber will be forwarded to the list.

Guidelines

  1. When replying to a message, please remember to delete the irrelevant portions of the original message from your "new" message.  For example, RootsWeb adds a "tag line" to the end of every message, such as:
    ==== KSGRAHAM Mailing List ====
    Graham Co. Kansas Mailing List
    Made possible by RootsWeb.
Simply delete it!  It only takes a moment to remove these but it saves time and space for everyone, particularly the RootsWeb archives.

  2. Please turn off any signature lines in your e-mail program.  Let's say I have a signature line which mentions six surnames I'm researching ("Researching:  Smith, Wilson, James, Trotter, Brown and Miller") and I use this on every post I make to a RootsWeb mailing list, regardless of whether those surnames are mentioned in the actual post.  When someone uses the Archives search engine in an effort to find posts mentioning TROTTER every one of my posts will appear on the results list.  Now that may not seem like a big deal, but some people literally post thousands of messages to mailing lists!

  3. The following items should not ever be posted to the mailing list:
    1. Virus alerts
    2. Chain letters
  4. Since we are unable to see a person's face, or hear the tone of voice, before posting a message, please ask yourself "Would I say this to the person's face?" If the answer is no, try rewording the message.

Archives

All messages are archived, so you may wish to refrain from revealing personal information such as phone number or physical address.

Message Boards

On the Message Board, you can search messages by a variety of means, such as category (birth, marriage, death, cemetery, census, etc.), surname, author as well as a date range. While you're at the Message Boards, please be sure to visit the Links & Announcements page for guidelines and hints.

Contacting Me

If this hasn't answered your questions, please feel free to email me privately. I hope you'll give both the Mailing List and the Message Boards a try!

Happy hunting!
Jackie
