Alig, Veteran Grocer Salesman, DiesWas Last of Many Who Once Traveled Over Leavenworth TerritoryCharles J. Alig, 1230 Ottawa Street, last of the great company of traveling salesmen who once tool to the road from Leavenworth, is dead at 88 years of age.The end came to Mr. Alig at 7 o'clock last night at St. John' Hospital after an illness of about two weeks. he had been in failing health for several months. Once a familiar figure to the business district of Leavenworth within recent years, he rarely had left his home. Mr. Alig was equally well known in the towns along the old LK&W, the KC&NW and the L&T Railroads, where for many years in the early 1890's he sold groceries for the firm of Bittman Taylor & Company later known as the Bittman Todd Grocery Company. RETIRED in 30'sThere still may be a few in Oskaloosa, Valley Falls, Winchester, McLouth, Holton and other towns to the west of Leavenworth who can remember the dark-haired ruddy-faced German who came bouncing into the grocery stores with his sample cases and his never fading smile. A great salesman. Alig even knew the kids on the street and frequently permitted them to peer into his sample cases.From the Leavenworth concern Alig made a connection with the Lee Mercantile Company of Kansas City and for more years he continued on the road for that concern. Among those who traveled out of Leavenworth with Mr. Alig were such well-known salesmen as Peter Sebus, Bob West, George Johnson, August Renz, Jim Ellott, Romer Wood and many others. Mr. Alig had been retired since the early 1930's. Was Born in GermanyBorn August 17, 1859, in Germany Mr. Alig came to America with his parents when three years old. The family settled in Pennsylvania.When he was 18, he came to Leavenworth and several years later returned to Columbia, Pa. where he married Anna Keller in February 1881. Mr and Mrs. Alig then came to Leavenworth where they made their home. Mrs. Alig died December 24, 1933. Mr Alig was a member of St. Joseph's Church. Surviving are four sons, Charles U. Alig of Blackfoot, Idaho, George A. Alig of the home, 1230 Ottawa Street, Elmer A. Alig of Memphis, Tenn., and Ernest E. Alig, 719 Ninth Avenue; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Forge, Rural route four, Leavenworth. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services Thursday MorningFuneral services will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's Church, the Rev. Fr. Herman Golebic, O'Carm. pastor officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery.Memorials of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph's Benevolent Society, and friends will assemble at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday night at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel for recitation of the Rosary. The body will remain at the chapel until the time of service. |

Kochanowski, 59, a resident of Leavenworth for the past 33 years, died at 8 o'clock last night at his home, 2516 South Fourth Street, following an illness of seven months.He was born June 21, 1889, in Ashton, Neb., a son of john and Veronica Kochanowski. In 1916 at St. Casimir's Church he married Mary Winnicki. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Kochanowski, of the home; sever daughters, Misses Lucille, Louise and Theresa Kochanowski, all of the home; Mrs. Frank Meyers, 2508 South Fourth Street; Mrs. John Norris, 913 Ottawa Street; Mrs. Milton Sowders, 310 Vilas Street and Mrs. Robert Huhn, 405 Logan Street; two sons, Clarence Kochanowski, 404 Logan Street, and Leon Kochanowski of the home; six sisters, Mrs. Anna Ward of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Mrs. Mary Walls of Van Nuys, Calif.; Mrs. Frances Santore of Forrest Park, Ill.; Mrs. Agens Topson of Evanston, Ill.; and Mrs. Helen Kwitkowski and Mrs. Barbara Kwitowski; both of Ashton, Neb.; four brothers, Anton Kochanowski of Ord, Neb.; Peter Kochanowski of Burwell, Neb.; Frank Kochanowski of rural route two, Leavenworth, and Andrew Kochanowski, 1900 South Fourth Street; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. Fr. Joseph Selting, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. |

Lozenski, 59, well known operator of the Elks Bottling Company died very unexpectedly late last night at his home, 1326 S. Broadway, following a heart attack. He has been a resident of Leavenworth for over 40 years.He was born Oct. 23, 1888 in Warsaw, Poland the son of John and Balbina Lozenski. The family came to American 64 years ago and settled in St. Joseph, Mo. Several years later they moved to Leavenworth where they have since made their home. On July 25, 1934 in Kansas City, Kas. he was married to Bernice Janesko. He and his brother, Joseph Lozenski, operated the bottling works. He was a member of the St. CasimirsChurch. Surviving other than his widow are three daughters, Mrs. John Steger, 1304 Dakota Street and Theresa Marie and Barbara Ann of the Home; four sons: John, Jr., Joseph and Lawrence Paul Lozenski and Robert Renkoski, all of the home; four brothers: Marion Lozenski, Kansas City, Mo.; Harry Merrison, Leavenworth, Joseph Lozenski, 927 Pottawatomie Street, and Frank Lozenski, 2630 South Fourth Street; two sisters: Mrs. Charles Tyler of Lawton, Okla., and Mrs. Herbert McGuire, Sixth and Olive Street. Funeral services will be Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock at the St. Casimirs Church with the Rev. Joseph Laczniak, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Cemetery. |

Last of Large Forge Family From GermanyJohn Forge, 88, Dies Early Yesterday at Farm Home On Rural Route Four.John Forge, 88, well known retired farmer and resident of Leavenworth County, died at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at his home on rural route four, following an illness of five months.He was born June 6, 1860 in Westphalen, Germany, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Forge. In 1879, at the age of 19, Mr. Forge came to America and settled in Leavenworth County. He was the first of many Forges to come to America and his death marks the last of the original Forge Family that came to this county from Germany. On October 21, 1888, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception he was married to Mary Elizabeth Kelly, Mrs. Forge died in 1939. Funeral TomorrowHe is survived by one daughter, Mrs. L. S. Daniels of Kansas City, Mo.; six sons, Thomas J. Forge, 1016 Kickapoo Street; Arch Forge of the home; Henry Forge of rural route four; John Forge, Jr., of the home, and William Forge of rural rout four, and 12 grandchildren.Funeral services will be Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Josephs's Church, the Rev. Herman Golobic, O Carm, pastor; officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Members of St. Joseph's Benevolent Society and friends will assemble tonight at 8 o'clock at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel for the recitation of the rosary. From the Leavenworth Times 2-4-1949 Mrs. Amelia Fischer Dies 2-4-1949Widow of Herman Fischr was 77--Came to City As Young Woman of 20Mrs. Amelia Fischer, 77, Twenty-first and Ohio Streets, widow of Herman A. Fischer, a resident of Leavenworth for more that 55 years, died at her residence at 7 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Fischer has been in failing health since Thanksgiving and confined to her bed since Christmas. She was born in Germany April 30, 1871, and came to Leavenworth in 1891, when she was 20 years old. She was married August 6, 1892, to Herman A. Fischer. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1942. Mr. Fischer died September 23, 1942. Surviving Mrs. Fischer are two daughters, Miss Martha Fischer, of the home, and Mrs. Thomas Farquhar, Dennison, Kas; three sons, Henry Fischer and Otto Fischer, of the home and Frank Fischer, Leavenworth; eight grandchildren seven great-grandchildren, and one brother, Fred Dage, Leavenworth. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Monday from the Sexton Funeral Chapel, with Rev Roy Brady, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Muncie Cemetery. The body will remain at the Sexton Funeral Chapel until the hour of services. |

(Tom) Farquhar, 72, a native of Leavenworth County who died yesterday at his home near Denison, will be Saturday afternoon at Denison. Burial will be in a cemetery there. Mr. Farquhar a farmer, was a resident of Leavenworth County most of his life. For the past four years he had lived on a farm near Denison. He had been in failing health. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Farquhar of the home; six daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Ruscone and Mrs. Helen Reed, both of Beloit, Wis., Mrs. Pearl Hunt, Mrs. Anna May Jepson and Miss Frances Farquhar, all of Kansas City, Kas., and Dorothy Farquhar of the home; two sons, Thomas J. Farquhar and James Farquhar, both of the home, and a half-bother, James Sewell, Kansas City, Kas. |

Death date 8-30-1949 Michael Kern Dies After a 5 Day Illness.Retired Farmer Garage Operator Here Was 79, Funeral Set Saturday.Funeral services are scheduled Thursday morning for Michael Kern, Sr., 79, retired farmer and garage operator here.Mr. Kern, a native of Germany died at 4 p.m. yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Myers, on RR 1. He had been ill five days. Coming to Leavenworth on his arrival in America at the age of 21, Mr. Kern in April 1895 married Miss Adelaide Forge. Most of his life was devoted to farming but for a number of years he was part owner of the Kern Gercken garage at Seventh and Shawnee with the late Henry Gercken as a partner. He retired from active ?? four years ago. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Theresa Gercken, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. John Martin, Sr. RR 1; Mrs. Charles Biltz, 321 Miami, and Mrs. Myers; two sons, Michael Kern, Jr., 115 North Seventh, and Maurice Kern, Eighteenth and Spruce; a brother Joseph Kern, of Germany; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Rev. Fr. Herman Golobic, O. Carm., will officiate at the funeral at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church where Mr. Kern was a member. Burial will be in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Members of the Third Order of Mount Carmel will assemble at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sumpter Funeral Chapel to recite the rosary. Members of the Daughters of Isabella will recite a rosary at the chapel at 7:45 and a rosary by the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph's Altar Society and St. Joseph's Benevolent Society, with other friends, is scheduled at the chapel at 8p.m. The body will be at the Sumpter Chapel until the time of services. |
