RICHARD MAXWELL

Richard "Dean" Maxwell, 69, Leavenworth, died Monday, Aug. 21, 1989, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Belden Funeral Chapel; burial will be in Mount Muncie Mausoleum.

Friends may call after noon Wednesday at the funeral chapel, where visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and Masonic services will be at 7:30p.m.

Mr. Maxwell was born Nov. 21, 1919, in Galva, Kan., the son of Samuel R. and Wanita Dielman Maxwell. He was a former partner and television repairman with the Boyer TV and Appliance. He retired in 1962. Previously, he had worked from 1945 to 1954 at Wisdom's Hardware.

He was a member of the Lansing Masonic Nine Mile Lodge No. 49, where he served a past master and past district deputy. He was a member of Eagles Aerie No. 55.

He married Josephine Studdard June 8, 1944. She preceded him in death Jan. 9, 1989.

He is survived by two brothers, William P. Maxwell, Laurel, Miss., and Samuel R. Maxwell Jr., Leavenworth; and a sister, Shirley Humphreys, Sedalia, Mo.

The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

HOWARD E. MOORE SR.

ENID, OKLA.--HOWARD E. MOORE SR., 78, formerly of Leavenworth, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1989, at his home in Enid.

The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the Henninger-Allen Funeral Home Chapel in Enid. A graveside service is planned for 5 p.m. in the Sunset Memory Gardens at Leavenworth.

He was born June 12, 1911, in Leavenworth, the son of Guy and Annie Maorale Moore and he had lived most of his life in Leavenworth. Mr. Moore was a foundry superintendent in Enid for the last several years retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the North Garland Road Church of Christ in Enid.

Survivors include his wife, June E. Moore, of the home; three sons, H.E. Moore Jr., Rowlett, Texas, Roy Moore, Birmingham, Ala., and Guy Moore, Vancouver, Wash; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Guy W. Moore, Leavenworth; and a sister, Ann K. Foy, Leavenworth.

Memorials are suggested to the North Garland Church of Christ or the American Cancer society.

Maurice Kern

Maurice L. "Dutch" Kern Sr., 87, Leavenworth, died early today, Monday Sept. 11, 1989, at the Leavenworth County Infirmary.

The Mass of Christian burial is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with Father Cecil Picker officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at Barnett Larkin Brown Funeral Home. Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m.

He was a lifelong area resident. He was born Aug. 22, 1902, in Leavenworth County, the son of Michael J. and Adeline Forge Kern. He married Grace A. Tearney on Oct. 21, 1925, at the St. Joseph of the Valley Church in rural Leavenworth. She survives at the home.

Mr. Kern farmed with his brother and father for many years. He worked as a furniture finisher with the Abernathy Furniture Co. of Leavenworth. He worked for 16 years for the Porter Oil Co. of Leavenworth and he was an agent for the Mobil Oil Co. He owned and operated Dutch's Friendly Service Station at the corner of Seventh Street and Cherokee Avenue for 23 years. He retired in 1965.

Mr. Kern was the band leader and played in his own dance band. He operated Kern's Dance Hall for many years and played at the Boling Grange dances for many years.

Mr. Kern also had several horses and he was the leader and rode in many area parade. He also ran a horse stud service for many years.

He was the former president of the Leavenworth Saddle club.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church. He was a member of the St. Joseph Benevolent Society and the Kansas Farm Bureau. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus with Knights of Columbus Council NO. 900 of Leavenworth. He was a former grandknight.

He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 55 of Leavenworth.

Besides his wife, other survivors include one son, Maurice L. Kern Jr., Leavenworth; one daughter, Dolores Marie McCurdy, Leavenworth; one sister Lucille Biltz, Leavenworth; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Mike Kern; and three sisters, Theresa Gercken, Catherine Meyers and Augusta Martens.

Agnes Forge

Agnes Scholastica Doman Forge, 94, a longtime Leavenworth resident, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 1990, at Providence St. Margaret Health Center, Kansas City, Kan.

Mass of Christian burial will be a 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church; burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Sunday at Belden Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.

Mrs. Forge was born June 16, 1895 in the Mooney Creek community, the daughter of William J. and Frances Didde Doman. She received a teaching certificate from the University of Kansas. She taught at the Salt Creek Valley School and at Fort Leavenworth. In later years she taught private piano lessons.

She was a member of St. Joseph church.

She married Thomas J. Forge June 16, 1925, in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death Jan 29, 1975.

She is survived by three sons, Cyril T. Forge, Leavenworth, Dale L. Forge, Manhattan, and Thomas J. Forge Jr., Atchison; three daughters, Joan M. Erffmeyer, Florissant, Mo., Audrey A. Fitzgerald, Granada Hills, Calif., and Agnes A. Clauser, Leavenworth; four sisters, Margaret Daigneaux and Gertrude Becker, both of Leavenworth, Marie Bertels, and Scholastica Schroeder, both Kansas City, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brother, William Doman, Father Aloysious Doman and Anthony Doman; and four sisters, Sister Angela Marie, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, Frances Doman, Clara Doman and Edith Moppin.

The family suggests contributions to St. John Hospital.

ROBERT L. ZULE

WINCHESTER --ROBERT L. (BOB) ZULE, 64, of Winchester, died late Easter Sunday evening, April 15, 1990, at his home.
Mr. Zule was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Leavenworth County, the son of Charles and Pauline Linaweaver Zule.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the former Winchester Christian Church, the Winchester American Legion Post No. 387 and the Oskaloosa Eagles.
Mr. Zule was a restaurant owner and operator.
Survivors include a son, Jackie Zule of Fort Knox, Ky; a daughter, Beberly A. Willey of Winchester; three brothers, Eugene Zule of Leavenorth, William C. Zule of Easton, and Leo D. Zule of McLouth, and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Winchester United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery east of Tonganoxie. Friends may call at the church before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at O'Trimble Funeral home in Nortonville.

Hudson L. McGuire

Hudson L. McGuire, 80, of Pacific Palisades, Calif. died Friday, May 18, 1990. Mr. McGuire spend his first 43 years in Leavenworth.
Graveside services will be at 2 P.M. Wednesday at Mount Muncie Cemetery. The Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Following graduation from Leavenworth High School, Mr. McGuire received an appointment to the U.S. Navel Academy at Annapolis, Md., where he was the leading scorer as a freshman on the varsity basketball team. He subsequently returned to Kansas where he played on the University of Kansas varsity basketball team under Phog Allen.
Mr. McGuire's father started a men's clothing store in the early 1900s in Leavenworth, and he operated the store along with him.
Mr. McGuire was a member of a number of civic organizations. In 1942 he was elected president of the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and in January 1943 he enlisted in the Navy and was awarded a commission as a lieutenant (JG).
While the executive officer of an LST, his ship was sunk by a German submarine near Anzio, Italy. Mr McGuire was awarded a number of medals, including the Navy and Marine medal for heroism.
The citation stated that "Lt. McGuire ... with complete disregard for his own safety went to the assistance of several men whose clothing was on fire and beat the flames out with his bare hands, suffering severe burns in the process. After he was forced to abandon the sinking ship he reached a life raft and although painfully injured, recovered survivors who were in danger of drowning."
Mr. McGuire was an outstanding amateur golfer and won many awards, including being low amateur in the Kansas City Open, winning the club championship numerous times at the Leavenworth Country Club, and the club championship at the Fort Leavenworth Golf Course. In 1938 he set course records at both golf courses.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann McGuire of the home; a daughter, Linda Last, Duncanville, Texas; a sone, H. Lee McGuire Jr., Leavenworth; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers and suggests contribution to St. Paul Lutheran Endowment Fund.

GLENN L. LINAWEAVER Sr. 74, owner of the Glenn Linaweaver and Sons Construction Company for 50 years, died Sunday Oct. 7, 1990, at his Lansing Home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2p.m. at the Belden Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Ray Gilstrap officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel, where family visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 that evening.
Mr. Linaweaver was a lifelong resident of the Leavenworth County area. He was born Oct.28, 1915, in Leavenworth County, the son of Claude B. Linaweaver and Margaret M. Smoot Linaweaver.
He married Dorothy M. Tuttle on Oct. 3, 1936, at Parkville, Mo. She survies at the home.
Mr Linaweaver was a member of the Lansing First Baptist Church, Eagles Aerie No. 55, and the American Coon Hunters Association.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Linaweaver is survived by two sons, Glenn L. Linaweaver Jr. of Lansing and Jerry B Linaweaver of Leavenworth County, a daughter Karen Sue Rush of Leavenworth County, a brother Walter Linaweaver of Lansing, a sister, Mary Rothe of Overland Park, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Claude Andrew Linaweaver in 1938 and a brother, Carl Linaweaver, in 1983.

Grace Kern

Grace Agnes Tearney Kern, 87, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 19, at the home of her son.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Barnett Larkin Brown Funeral Home, where a parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kern was a lifelong resident of the Leavenworth area. She was born Aug. 12, 1903, at Lowemont, the daughter of Charles and Sizie Smith Tearney.

Mrs. Kern was a graduate of Easton High School. She became a telephone operator in the Kansas City area and advanced to operator supervisor.

She was married to Maurice L. "Dutch" Kern Sr. on Oct. 21, 1925, at St. Joseph of the Valley Church in rural Leavenworth County.

She worked for many years with her husband as a bookkeeper in the family owned Mobil Oil business until her retirement in 1965. She also operated Kern's Dance Hall with her husband and accompanied him as his band played for Boling Grange Dances for many years.

Mrs. Kern was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Daughters of Isabella. She also was involved in the Leavenworth Saddle Club with her husband for many years.

Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1989.

Survivors include a son, Maurice L. Kern Jr., Leavenworth; a daughter, Dolores Marie McCurdy, Leavenworth; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, George Tearney , and five sisters, Mary Heintzelman, Clara Smith, Adeline Tearney and Nellie Tearney.

She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Claude Andrew in 1938, and a brother, Raymond Tutttle, in 1985.
Mrs Linaweaver had been a saleswoman for Stanley Home Products until 1948, when she became a homemaker. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Aerie No. 55, the Builders Sewing Club, the Lansing Community Club, the Lansing First Baptist Church and the American Coon Hunters Association.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn L. Linawever Jr., Lansing, and Jerry B. Linaweaver, Leavenworth County, a daughter, Karen Sue Rush, leavenworth County, and a sister, M.Leona Etherton, Concord, Calif, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren

Elizabeth Fink

Elizabeth M. "Lena" Fink, a homemaker, died Sunday, April 14, 1991, at St. John Hospital. She was 85.

Mrs. Fink was born Aug. 27, 1905, in Leavenworth County, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Greka Flora. She was a lifelong area resident.

She married Henry R. Fink on April 17, 1937, in Leavenworth County. He survives at the home.

Mrs. Fink was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leavenworth and its Ladies' Altar Society.

A brother, Henry A. Flora, Leavenworth, also survives. Two infant children, two half-sisters and a half-brother preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Chapel where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m..

Friends may call after noon today at the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church, with burial in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Mary Kern

Mary Wells Kern, a former business owner and lifelong resident of Leavenworth, died Tuesday, April 23, 1991, at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, she was 86.

Mrs. Kern had lived in Leavenworth all her life and moved to St. Louis in 1990 due to ill health.

She was born in Leavenworth on Aug. 22, 1904, the daughter of Thomas Wells and Margaret Cahill Wells, She married Michael Kern Jr. on Sept. 8, 1926, in Easton. He preceded her in death in May 1986.

She was a travel agent and had owned the Mary Kern Travel Agency in Leavenworth for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its altar society. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Pilot Club of Leavenworth, the Daughters of Isabella and the LCBA.

She was a graduate of Easton High School in 1923.

Survivors include two daughter, Sister Darlyne Kern, SCL, at the Mother house, Leavenworth, and Anita Gill, Florissant, Mo.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kern was preceded by a son, two sisters, and two brother.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel.

A Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be held in conjunction with the parish rosary, which will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday.
