Taken from the Leavenworth Times 6-4-1991 by Sue Rush. Charles Hill Sr.Charles R. Hill Sr., a retired cabinetmaker, died Sunday, June 2, 1991, at his home in Leavenworth. He was 67.Mr. Hill was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Smithville, Mo., the son of Chrles T. and Elsie Francis Huntsman Hill. He worked for many years at Kaaz Woodworking, and also at the Great Western Manufacturing co. He married Alice M. Berry on Aug. 15, 1941, in Platte City, Mo. She survives at the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Zink and Kay Michaud, both of Leavenworth: three sons, Ray Hill Sr., Tom Hill Sr., and Charles Hill Jr., all of Leavenworth: his mother, Elsie Vestal, Lansing; four brothers, Alva Hill, New York, James Hill, Earl Hill, and Joe Hill, all of Leavenworth; three sisters, Ruth O'Rourke, Ferrelview, Mo., Cora Lea Bergman, St. Joseph, Mo., and Betty Linaweaver, Leavenworth; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Gerald Ray Hill, and a sister, Rosa Simonis. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and also from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in the Mount Muncie Cemetery. The Rev. Russell Patton and the Rev. Gerald E. Todd will officiate. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society. |

from the KANSAS CITY STAR June 16, 1991 Amelia K. COFFIN Amelia K. COFFIN, 85, Leavenworth, died June 14, 1991, at Cushing Memorial Hospital, Leavenworth. She was a lifelong Leavenworth resident. Mrs. COFFIN was a member of the Springdale Friends Church, Springdale, Kan. She was a 60-year member of the Springdale Homemakers Club and a past member of the McLouth chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband of 58 years, Charles C. COFFIN, died in 1982. Survivors include two sons, Keith COFFIN, Lenexa, and Lyle Coffin, Leavenworth; a brother, Henry Messinger, Midvale, Utah; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Davis Chapel, Leavenworth; burial in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Leavenworth. |

Forge of rural Leavenworth, a homemaker, died Thursday, Nov.. 21, 1991, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. She was 82.Mrs. Forge was born March 29, 1909, in Rushville, Mo., the daughter of Howard Charles and Mary Jane Gore Culp. She married Leo M. Forge in June of 1936. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Leo Forge, Walter Forge and Raymond Forge, all of Leavenworth; one daughter, Margaret Kowalewski, Clinton, Tenn.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Forge was preceded in death by one brother. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home. The Rev Arnold Twenhafel, of St. Jon Lutheran Church of Easton, will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Langley Cemetery west of Easton. |

Taken from the Leavenworth Times Jan. 9, 1992 by Sue Rush Robert C. Standiford, a retired farmer, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1992, at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 96. He was born March 15, 1894, in Leavenworth, the son of James and Anna Standiford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I and a member of the Nazarene Church. He married Virginia Broda on Jan. 28, 1931. She survives in Mattoon, Ill. Other survivors include a daughter, Millie Alemang, Kearney, Mo., a son, Raymond Standiford, Grandbury, Texas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. |

Mary L. McFarlandMary L. "Vera" McFarland, a waitress, country-western singer and a longtime Leavenworth area resident, Died Saturday, March 7, 1992, at the Providence Place Nursing Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was 68.She was born Nov. 4, 1923, the daughter of Allie Domann and Genevieve Hund Domann. She married Paul B. McFarland on May 21, 1963, in Miami, Okla. He survives at the home. Mrs. McFarland had worked as a waitress at Dubach's Grill in Leavenworth for more that 25 years. She had also worked at other restaurants in the Atchison and Leavenworth area. Mrs. McFarland sang and performed country-western music with her brother, Andrew Domann, in various cities and towns in the area. Mrs. McFarland was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leavenworth and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband; a brother, Eugene Domann, Winchester, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis, Thomas and Andrew Domann; and two sisters, Genevieve Kramer and Josephine Miller. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Visitation is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, where the parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leavenworth. Burial will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery (that's in Jefferson County) in Mooney Creek.

Hazel R. SassHazel Ruth Sass, Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, March 26, 1992, at Providence-St. Margaret Health Center. She was 68.Mrs. Sass was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Kansas City, Kan. Survivors include her husband, Elmer A. Sass, of the home; two sons, Loren Dean Knight, Ramona, Calif. and Phillip Andres Sass, Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Sheryll Jeanne Harris, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Marshy Lynn Gaunce, Kansas City, Kan.; and seven grandchildren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Porter Chapel in Kansas City, Kan. Services will begin at 10 a.m. at the chapel. Entombment will be in the Mt. Muncie mausoleum, Leavenworth. |

Cornelius C. O'ConnorCornelius C. "Bud" O'Connor, a former Leavenworth city commimssioner and a lifelong resident, died Thursday, March 26, 1992 at St. John Hospital. He was 91.He was born Nov. 28, 1900, in Leavenworth, the son of Martin J. O'Connor and Ellen Craven O'Connor. He attended the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. Mr. O'Connor was a construction inspector with the Kansas City and Omaha districts of the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He retired in 1964 after 35 years of service. After retirement he continued his interest in politics and was a city commissioner in the late 1960s. Mr. O'Connor was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and was a member of its board in the late 1960s. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Leavenworth, was a former president and statewide vice president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a member of the Leavenworth Genealogical Society. In 1948, Mr. O'Connor was awarded the U.S. Army's Meritorious Civilian Award for Bravery after saving the life of a co-worker during a fire. He was a charter of the American Association of Retired Person, a charter member of the Leavenworth Council on Aging, and had been its president and treasurer. He married Leona A. Kingston on April 14, 1932 in Union, Mo. Mrs. O'Connor survives at the home. Other survivors include two daughter, Mary Ellen Kenaga and Berniece L. O'Connor; a sister, Berenice O'Connor; and a grandson, Michael Kenaga, all of Leavenworth. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. |

Kenny, 85, Leavenworth, a retired cafeteria supervisor, died Friday, March 27, 1992. at Cushing Memorial hospital after a long illness.She was born Dec. 8, 1906, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Warren Andrew and Cora Etta Short Hallaux. She was a lifelong Leavenworth resident. Mrs. Kenny was a cafeteria supervisor and worked at Cushing Memorial Hospital and in the Leavenworth Public Schools. She retired in 1978 after 35 years in food service. She was an active member of the Southern Heights United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Friendship Club, the Salvation Army Club, Eagles Auxiliary No. 55 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 23 of Leavenworth. She married John J. Kenny on Oct 6, 1924, in Leavenworth. He died Nov. 26, 1968. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth K. Kenny, James A. Kenny and Michael D. Kenny, all of Leavenworth; three daughters, Louetta K. Baskas, Leavenworth, Darlene M. Mann, Houston, and Joan M. Seymour, Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Dorothea M. Helm and Gertrude E. Christ, both of Leavenworth; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Howard E. Kenny; a brother, Henry W. Hallaux; and a sister, Helen Korth. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens. |
reprinted from the Leavenworth Times, Sunday, March 29, 1992. George A. BohnGeorge Albert Bohn, Leavenworth, a retired railroad worker, died Friday, March 27, 1992, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He was 92.He was born Aug. 12, 1899, in Fort Scott, the son of George W. and Mary Kropf Bohn. He moved to Leavenworth from Topeka in 1938. Mr. Bohn worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 49 ½ years, retiring March 1, 1967. From 1938 to 1963 he took a leave of absence from Union Pacific Railroad to be the supervising clerk for the Leavenworth Depot and Railroad Company. Following its closing in 1963, he transferred back to Union Pacific. He was a 1916 graduate of Wamego High School and served in the Kansas State Guard during World War I. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Leavenworth, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 900, Leavenworth, serving as a past faithful navigator and was an honorary life member. He also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 55 and the Transportation and Communications Union. He married Lena Bellinder on Nov. 25, 1923, in Wamego. She died Sept. 8, 1965. He then married Beulah Doyle Knaeble, on July 30, 1966. She died Dec. 8, 1986. Survivors include a son, Donald Bohn, Camino, Calif.; a daughter, Dorothy Robare, Leavenworth; two brothers, Leo Bohn, Jamestown, and Fred Bohn, Manhattan; two sisters, Josephine Sylvester, Tucson, Ariz and Katheryn Hatton, Woodbury, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; a step-grandson; 12 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6:30 TO 8 P.M. Monday at Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary cemetery. |

Anthony J. JanaszAnthony J. "Biff" Janasz, 70, Leavenworth, a retired welder, died Saturday, March 28, 1992, at the Kansas City, Mo., Veterans Hospital.He was born March 26, 1921, in Leavenworth, the son of Barthelemew and Ann Marie Blecharczyk Janasz. He was a lifelong resident of Leavenworth. Mr. Janasz was a welder for many years, working for various companies in Leavenworth, including the Missouri Valley Steel Co. and Theel's Manufacturing Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Janasz was a life member of the VFW Post No. 45 of Leavenworth. He belonged to St. Casimir Catholic Church. Survivors include his fiancee, Dorothy L. Peters, Leavenworth; three brothers, Frank V. Janasz, Washington, Florain V. Janasz, Knox, Ind., and Valentine "Bud" Janasz, Prairie Village; a sister, Sophoia Formansky, Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery. |
