EUGENE "GENE" W. ZULE

He was born the son of Charles W. and Pauline (Linaweaver) Zule on Sept. 21, 1916, in McLouth.

He married Claudine (Mitchell) Leavitt on April 22, 1994, in Leavenworth. She survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian M. Tarr, whom he married on Oct. 26, 1936, in Leavenworth. She passed away Dec. 6, 1992.

Gene had worked for more than 25 years as a truck driver at the Goodjohns Sash and Door Company and retired as a truck driver from Wicks Lumber where he worked for more than 10 years. He was a member of the Teamsters.

He is survived by his wife, Claudine; three sons, Ronald G. Zule, Leavenworth, Charles Larry Zule, Mayetta, and Gary E. Zule, Leavenworth; daughter, Linda G. Patterson, Meriden; brother, Leo Daryl Zule, Nortonville; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife, Vivian; and brothers, William and Robert Zule, preceded him in death.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapels, 500 Oak St., Leavenworth, KS 66048, (913) 682-1614.

A funeral service officiated by Pastor Bud Jones will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to the High Prairie Church in care of the funeral home.

MAN TRAMPLED BY CALVES.

Eugene W. Zule, 86, had sold the calves and was moving them from a pen to be loaded onto a trailer late Saturday morning at 26974, 179th St. according to Sgt. Andy Dedeke, Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office.

He was holding a gate when several calves weighing an estimated 300 to 400 pounds knocked the gate down. The gate landed on top of Zule. The calves then walked over the gate as Zule still laid underneath.

Zule's granddaughter and the person who was purchasing the calves were at the scene at the time of the accident.

The Delaware Township Fire Department, Leavenworth County EMS and the sheriff's office responded. Zule was transported to Saint John Hospital and later flown by helicopter to KU Med Center, Kansas City, Kan., for possible internal and head injuries, Dedeke said.

Zule died the next day at KU Med Center, according to the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapels.

George Weir was my GG-uncle. He was born March 25, 1836 in TN. His parents were William B. C. and Catherine Weir. He moved from St. Clair Co. Missouri between the 1860 and 1870 censuses. George was in the Tonganoxie 1870 census. Although I can't find him in the 1880 census, he was in Leavenworth in 1900 and the article says he was a longtime resident. I am searching for any of his direct descendants so if you find any, send them my way! (smile)

WALTER W. WAGNER

He was born the son of Peter M. and Mary E. Wagner on Dec. 25, 1930 in Easton, Kan.

He married Shirley A. Bayles on April 14, 1950 in Easton. She survives at the home.

He worked in Ewing, Mo. for Reno Construction Co. for a few years until he went to work in the oil field for Sunflower Oil. He helped establish LEXECO along with Eldon Loreing in 1953 and built the company into what it is today. He managed the company for 42 years before retiring. He started Walt Wagner Construction Company, Inc. in 1996. He worked along with Dennis Gwartney and Buddy Lee who were his close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Peter Wagner, Clarence Wagner, and Leo Wagner. Two grandchildren, Cynthia Wagner and Nicholas Wagner.

Survivors include seven children, Sharon Wagner, Stillwell, Okla, Ron Wagner (Lynne), Easton, Janice Jones (Rick) Easton, Rick Wagner (Tammy) Easton, Terri Ehart (Kipp Barnett) Easton, Sandy Johnson (Bill) Easton and Stephen Wagner of the home; thirteen grandchildren, Stacy, Amy , Beverly, Ronda, Megan, Heidi, Ricky, Misty Lee, Shauntae, Rachel, Rusty and Ashley; seven great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Amber, Jacob, Nolan, Cody, Nicole, Hunter and one on the way; brothers and sisters, Robert Wagner, Anthony Wagner, Merlin Wagner, Marie Keeny and Claire Goetz.

Visitation will be held at the Davis Funeral Chapel from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003. Visitation also will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Easton. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24. Interment will follow in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family suggest memorials be made to the American Lung Association.

Rick J. Lange

Rick graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1969. Rick married Evelyn D. Wolters on March 17, 1972, in Leavenworth.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, Victoria A. and Randy Tague, Gallatin, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. and Sara (Runnebaum) Lange, Lenexa; and grandchildren, Meagan and Nathan Tague, Gallatin, Mo.

Other survivors include his mother, Violet Lange, Lansing; three brothers, Virgil T. Lange III and his wife, Lynn, Leavenworth, Gary Lange and his wife, Brenda, Lansing, Terry Lange, Leavenworth; two sisters, Glenda M. (West) Dickinson and her husband, Gary, Melbourne, Australia, and Norma J. (West) Brenneman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Rick was employed by General Electric Co. for the past 26 years, prior to his employment with General Electric, he was employed by L & R Refrigeration and Fearn's Furniture & Appliance.

Services will be held at the Davis Funeral Chapel at Sixth and Shawnee streets, Leavenworth. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Internment will be in the Fall Creek Cemetery, Jarbalo. Memorial contributions may be given to the Mother to Mother Ministry of Leavenworth County Inc., P.O. Box 2077, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Edna L. Asbury

She was born July 1, 1910, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Otto Korth and Martha Butzin Korth. She married Arthur H. Asbury on Aug. 29, 1929, in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker. She had worked for the S.S. Kresge Co. for 14 years. She was a member of the National Campers and Hikers and the Pioneer Camping Club.

Edna is survived by her daughter, Janice Calvacca, Lansing; her son, retired Col. Francis L. Asbury, Niceville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ernest Korth; and two sisters, Freda Woodard and Margie Donnell.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Dr. Randall A. Terrill of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Florence Louise Roach

Florence Louise Roach was born the daughter of Archie Carl and Victoria Singleton on Nov. 6, 1920, in Independence, Mo., and died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lansing.

She lived and attended school in Independence, Mo., and graduated from William Krisman High School in 1938.

She worked for the Army Quartermasters in Kansas City during World War II.

Florence was united in marriage to William F. Roach on Feb. 14, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., and shortly thereafter they made their home in Leavenworth. To this union three children were born: Vicky, Doug and Jeff.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Victoria Singleton; her husband, William F. Roach; one brother, Edwin Singleton; and one grandson, Justin Alan See.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicky Roach See and her husband, Alan, of Peru, Iowa; two sons, William Douglas Roach and Jeffrey Alan Roach and his wife, Lori, of Leavenworth; two granddaughters, Lindsay Roach Krites of Leavenworth, and Ashley Roach of Lansing; two grandsons, Jeffrey Alan Roach II and William James Roach, one great-grandson, Christopher Austin Krites, all of Leavenworth; and one sister, Dorothy Buford of Sugar Creek, Mo.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Francis E. McCarbrey

He was born Sept. 25, 1916, in Leavenworth, the son of Michael T. and Sadie Wrigley McCarbrey. On July 30, 1939, he married Neva L. Stewart in Lansing.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked for Butler Manufacturing as a welder. He was retired.

Francis is survived by his wife, Neva L. McCarbrey, of the home; two daughters, Deborah Smith, Lansing, and Kelli Varner, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; six grandchildren, devoted grandson, Cary Smith, and grandson, Shane Smith; granddaughters, Jennifer DeMaranville, Kyler Mason, Shawna Varner and Calli Varner; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; devoted niece, Sherry Alford; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Mount Muncie Cemetery Mausoleum. No visitation is planned. The Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ann L. Sachse

She was born the daughter of Emory Alfred and Martha (Richstatter) Bromell on Sept. 21, 1921, in Leavenworth.

She married Herman R. Sachse on June 21, 1947, at St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church of Easton. He passed away Jan. 23, 1998.

Ann was born and raised in the Leavenworth area. After graduating from Immaculata Catholic High School, she taught briefly at the Bell one-room schoolhouse before raising her family. Later in life she graduated from Saint Mary College. She was a lifetime member of the St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church, the Altar Society, a 4-H leader and CCD instructor. Ann enjoyed quilting and genealogy. She made many prize winning quilts and wrote several books about the family history. She loved any sport her family was involved in and was an avid Royals fan.

She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Mary Ann and Toby Brown, Easton, Marti J. and Frank Judson, Denver, Rita R. and Eugene Heim, Leavenworth, and Laura M. and Jerry Cross, Atchison; two sons and their wives, Richard A. and Sue Sachse, Easton, and Herman J. and Kim Sachse, Leavenworth; two sisters, Lydia Heintzelman, Leavenworth, and Martha and her husband, Harold Heim, Easton; one brother and his wife, Johnny and Norma Bromell, Leavenworth; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband of more than 50 years, Herman; and sister, Essie Lallier; all preceded her in death.

A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapels, 500 Oak St., Leavenworth, KS 66048, 682-1614. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to St. Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church or the Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
