Dena Kail Bigge, infant child of Douglas Edward and Kori Leann (Karstetter)
Bigge, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Childrens Mercy Hospital, Kansas City,
Mo. She was born Aug. 7, 2008, in Topeka.
Survivors include her parents, Plainville; paternal grandparents, Tom and
Ruth Ann Bigge, Stockton; maternal grandparents, Tim and Marilyn Karstetter,
McPherson; and a sister, Kourtney Bigge, Plainville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plainville United Methodist Church;
burial in Bigge Family Cemetery, rural Stockton.
No visitation is planned.

Arnold B. Hake, 90, Plainville, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Rooks County
Health Center, Plainville. He was born Feb. 3, 1918 in Tipton, to John J. and Martha (Adam) Hake. He
graduated from Tipton High School and attended a year of college in Conception,
Mo. He married Lorene Rempe on Dec. 29, 1956, in Plainville. He was a carpenter.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two brothers, Joe Hake, Plainville,
and Raymond Hake, Willis, Texas; three sisters, Rita Erickson and Geraldine
Karns, both of Plainville, and MaryLee Berland, Clifton, Colo.; four
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, John K. Hake in 2002 and William "Bill"
Hake in 1983.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
Plainville; burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday,
both at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Plainville.
A Ladies Guild rosary will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a vigil, Knights
of Columbus rosary and Daughters of Isabella rosary at 7 p.m., all at the
chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart School, or to the Conception Seminary
College in care of the chapel.

Aerial H. Lemon, 85, Stockton, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at Solomon Valley
Manor, Stockton. She was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Phillips County to Frank John and Hazel Dortha
(Klink) Gingles. She married Lauren L. Lemon on Dec. 22, 1940, in Phillipsburg. She was a
homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Stockton; a son, Lonnie Lemon, Gretna, Neb.; a
daughter, Linda Colburn, Stockton; two brothers, Adrian Gingles, Phillipsburg,
and Armand Gingles, Logan; a sister, Arloa Clark, Corydon, Iowa; seven
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel,
Phillipsburg; burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and
from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday, all at the chapel.

PLAINVILLE — Stephen Maurice Link, 57, died Aug. 24 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita. He was born June 7, 1951, at Lyons,
the son of Paul Maurice and Dixie Lee Simpson Link. He married Marie Walters in
1970 at Hays, and married Judy Urban in 1972, also at Hays. He was a Plainville
resident since 1972, formerly of Hays. He was an oilfield laborer and co-owner
of Lucky Iron Oil Production.
Mr. Link was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville.
Survivors include a son, Buck Link, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Dawn
Stephanie Schramm of Middleton, Wis., Brandy Rene Lee of Fort Morgan, Colo., and
Terri Rae Link of Newberg, Ore.; his mother, Dixie Link, of Salina; a brother,
Randy Link, of Wichita; two sisters, Vicki Black of Stillwater, Okla., and Paula
Link of Salina; and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, Ellinwood, with Father Dwight Birket officiant. Burial will be at
Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home. Donations are suggested to the Steve Link Family

Jerome Victor Simoneau, 65, Damar, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at his home. He was born March 1, 1943, in Palco to Victor Leo and Cecelia Amanda (Benoit)
Simoneau. He was a painter.
Survivors include two sons, Justin Simoneau and Ricky Gochis, both of Denver;
four brothers, Jedeon Simoneau, Cody, Wyo., Ronald Simoneau, Bogue, Marvin
Simoneau, Lafayette, Colo., and Denis Simoneau, Henderson, Colo.; five sisters,
Maxine Dieterich, Hays, Eileen Pekarek, Topeka, Janice Dieterich, Amarillo,
Texas, Phyllis Hartsock, and Angie Steel, both of Westminster, Colo.; and five
grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar;
burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
There is no visitation.
A vigil/rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Caroline Corine Garrett, age 87, passed away on sunday, July 27, 2008, at her home in Cassville, Missouri, following a lengthy illiness. Mrs. Garrett, daughter of George and Malvina Plante Newell, was born on
January 18, 1921, in Damar, Kansas. Caroline was a natural artist. She was a
member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Cassville, Missouri. She married Leonard LaBarge who died on November 27, 1944 while serving with
the U. S. Armed Forces in Germany during World War II. She married Melvin
Garrett on April 5, 1955 in Wichita, Kansas, and he survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Larry LaBarge and his wife, Joyce; one
grandson, Darin LaBarge and his wife, Terri; one granddaughter, Monique Ellis
and her husband, Shane; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Nolan and Maegan;
one step-son Johnny Charles, of Sacramento, California; two step-daughters,
Berna Gaye Weiland, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Elizabeth Ann of the state of
California; and one brother, Edward Newell, of Hoxie, Kansas. In addition to her
parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Admore
Newell and Armand Newell, and two sisters, Ida Saindon and one sister who died
at a very young age.
Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until after the vigil service that will be
held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1st at St.
Joseph Catholic Church in Damar, Kansas, with burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Shirley Deane Munson, 69, Las Vegas, formerly of Plainville, died Tuesday,
July 22, 2008. She was born April 18, 1939, in Russell to Elmo Charles and Verna Dene
(Preble) Hamblet. She was a graduate of Plainville High School. She married Robert Munson on Nov. 1, 1996, in Las Vegas.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; three daughters, Pam Burkett,
Haysville, Kim Gottschalk, Las Vegas, and Sherri Stover, Bennington; two
brothers, Larry Hamblet, Miami, and Rocky Hamblet, Plainville; five
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Plainville City Cemetery.

Dr. Robert Reed, 89, Fargo, N.D., formerly of Spirit Lake, Vergas, Minn.,
died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Triumph Hospital, Fargo. He was born Oct. 15, 1918, in Stockton to John and Ella (Chamberlain) Reed.
He graduated from Stockton High School, and Kansas State Veterinary College in
1944. He married Alice Nelson on Dec. 31, 1947, in Clifford, N.D. He worked as an
assistant to the state veterinarian. He was a veteran, serving during World War
II.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, John Reed, Brooten, Minn.,
and Terry Reed, Hillsboro, N.D.; three daughters, Vickie Milde, Menasha, Wisc.,
Susan Stringer, Modesto, Calif., and Kim Smith, McAllen, Texas; 12
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were July 1 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.

Christina Gail Cole, 36, Palco, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at her home. She was born Nov. 3, 1971, in Hays to John Myron and Barbara June (Germany)
Cole. She was a dental hygienist.
Survivors include her parents, Palco; a brother, John Cole Jr., Leavenworth;
and a sister, Lori Childs, Rome, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Red Line Church of God, rural Palco;
burial in Morlan Township Cemetery, rural Palco.

Mildred "Millie" Stahley, 80, Casa Grande, Ariz., formerly of Evanston,
Wyo., died Thursday, June 12, 2008, in Casa Grande. She was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Rooks County.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Stahley, of the home; two sons, Dale
Johnston and Lyle Johnston; a daughter, Victoria Johnston; two step-sons, Ronald
Stahley and Richard Stahley; two step-daughters, Sherry Anderson and Margaret
Johnson; a brother, Harold McCue; two sisters, Della Johnston and Blanch Allen;
her grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday Crandall Funeral Home; burial in Evanston City
Cemetery.

Unknown Date & Newspaper Charles "Chuck" Durlin Reading
Charles (Chuck) Durlin Reading, was born May 28, 1938 to Durlin D.
Reading and Alvera Berg Reading in Idaho Falls, ID. He graduated from I. F.. High School in 1956. He Joined the U.S. Navy in
June 1956 and was released from active duty in June
1960. He came to Denver, CO in 1961 to work for AT&T, later for Mountain
Bell and retiring from US West in 1992. He was active in the Telephone Pioneers for many years and received many
awards from the Pioneers. As his health failed, he was not able to be active
with his volunteer work. He was a custom leather tooler, wood craftsman, and enjoyed his days
playing the piano. He also made his own kites, and loved flying his kites with
his children and grandchildren.
Chuck is survived by, his wife
Janice(Simpson), (formally of Codell KS) of the home. His son Brad (Denise)
Reading; his Daughters Kimberly (Mike) Shuman; Brenda Armendariz; Heidi
Sarmiento; and Dawn Reading; His Sister, Barbara (Carlos) Manzanares; 11 Grandchildren and 4 Great
Grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by, his Parents, Infant son, Charles Jr.,
Brother, Robert Reading, and Nephew, Marco
Manzanares.
His body was cremated and his remains will be put to rest at the Norman
Cemetery, Ellis County KS at a later date with Military
Honors. (He died June 18, 2008 in Denver, CO.)

Harold Simons, 78, Stockton, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Solomon Valley
Manor, Stockton. He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Stockton to Edgar D. and Vera (Betts) Simons.
He was a 1949 graduate of Stockton High School. He married Joan Machart on Aug. 11, 1952, in Oberlin. She preceded him in
death Jan. 11, 1969. He later married Lois (Von Schriltz) Grover on Feb. 14,
1978, in Hays. He was a farmer in Rooks County for 55 years.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, Mark and Terry, both of
Carencro, La., and Paul, Colby; two daughters Shelley Lewis, Denton, Texas, and
Connie Fross, Hays; a step-son, Mike Grover, Parker, Colo.; a step-daughter,
Susan Grover, Omaha, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita, and a step-son, Dana Grover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Stockton;
burial in Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, both
at Kemp Family Funeral Chapel, Stockton, and from 10 a.m. until time of service
Saturday at the church.

Leonard Erle Muir
Leonard Erle Muir, 77, Stockton, died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Wesley Medical
Center, Wichita.
He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Rooks County to Leigh and Florence (Davis) Muir.
He graduated from Stockton High School and received his bachelor's and master's
degrees from Kansas State University in history and secondary education. He
later earned his elementary education certificate from Fort Hays State
University.
He married Shirlee Hazen on Oct. 25, 1953, in Stockton. He taught in the
Grinnell school district for eight years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran,
serving during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Royce Muir and Verl Muir,
both of Stockton; his daughters Cindy Evans, Topeka, Susan Thoman, Andale, and
Sharon Russ, Colwich; a brother, Lewis Muir, Los Alamos, N.M.; nine
grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Stockton;
burial in Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, both at

Grant Conger, 61, Stockton, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at his home.
He was born Dec. 20, 1946, to John and Wilma (Blecha) Conger. He graduated from
Woodston High School and Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in
business and economics.
He was a construction supervisor.
Survivors include a daughter, Jill St. Clair, Casa Grande, Ariz.; his parents,
Woodston; and a grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home,
Stockton; burial in Ash Rock Cemetery near Woodston, with military honors by
Monroe-Taylor-Barnes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8873.

public schools and was a 1959 graduate of Damar High School. She married Alfred B. Normandin on June 13, 1959. She helped run their custom
painting business.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, Greg Normandin,
Gloucester, Va., and Blaine Normandin, Raymore, Mo.; three daughters, Sandra
Gehring, Plainville, Darla Garcia, Misawa, Japan, and Amber Normandin, Astoria,
N.Y.; seven brothers, Gilbert Berland and Timothy Berland, both of Damar, Gary
Berland, Smithfield, Va., Steve Berland, Manhattan, Mark Berland, Poquoson,
Terry Berland, Lebo, and Reginald Berland, Colorado; four sister, Carol Roy,
Wichita, Susan German-Eye, Missouri, Cindy Moore, Longwood, Fla., and Laura
Weatherly, Kitty Hawk, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at Moore-Overlease Funeral
Chapel, Plainville, and from 7 p.m. until the end of the vigil at the church.

AUGUSTA - Williams, Velma Jean (Meistrell) 75, born at Hays, Kans and native
of Plainville, Kans and longtime Augusta, Kans resident died Memorial Day
afternoon, May 26, 2008 at the Wheat State Manor Nursing Home in Whitewater,
Kans. Daughter of Charles Edwin Della Viola (Gordon) Meistrell, and eldest
grand-daughter of prominent farmer rancher, and long time native, founder
pioneering resident Plainville area of Kansas, Theodore Emma (Boten) Meistrell. Velma was a member of the Rainbow Girls Society, graduated with honors from
East High in Wichita. Then, she attended the Vernon Beauty School graduating
with honors as a Beautician. She met the light love of her life, Carl Chester Williams (native of DesArc,
Ark), through her cousin, later married sharing his life as the wife of a
Decorated Korean/Vietnam US Army Veteran. She traveled the world with Carl,
maintained her salon in her home while he served in the military. January 31,
2008 they shared their 55th wedding anniversary. She was 3 years old when she
was preceded in death by her father, Charles Edwin Meistrell (51), brother,
Charles Edwin Meistrell, Jr. (8) in a DUI accident. Later her mother Della (83)
in 1985; 2 grandchildren by her daughter; 1 great-grandchild by her
granddaughter.
Survivors include husband, Carl Chester Williams - retired US Army Veteran
and two children Carla J. Williams, RN, BSN disabled Navy Vietnam Veteran of
Haysville, Kans, 1 great-granddaughter, Dasha M. Taft (Dale) Nichols,
Springdale, Ark 4 great-grandsons; son John E. (Kristi) Williams, retired US Air
Force Veteran, Las Vegas.
Visitation viewing will be from 1-2:30, Saturday, May 31 at Dunsford~Zeiner
Funeral Home, Augusta. Saturday, June 7, 2-3 visitation graveside service at
Culpepper Lakes Cemetery in DeValls Bluff, Ark.
If inclement weather, services will be held in the Peppers Lake Church on the
cemetery grounds.

William Doyle "Doyle" Holcombe, 79, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Solomon
Valley Manor, Stockton. He was born May 17, 1929, northeast of Stockton to John Wesley and Matilda
Susan (Napier) Holcomb(e). He was a 1948 graduate of Stockton High School. He married Neva Maxine McCormick on Aug. 18, 1949. She preceded him in death
in June 2006. He was an aircraft inspector.
Survivors include a son, Garold Doyle Holcombe, Maud, Okla.; a daughter,
Wilma M. Welch, Stockton; a sister, Mary C. Morgan, White Plains, Md.; two
grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death, by an infant daughter, Carol Jean, in 1952; a
stillborn son, David, in 1955; and an infant grandson in 1973.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will until 8 p.m. today, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, both at
Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home.

Martha E. Dettmer, 94, Stockton, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Rooks County
Health Center, Plainville. She was born Dec. 25, 1913, near Alton to Thomas and Eva (Smith) Delaney. She
was a graduate of Alton High School. She married Thomas Welker on June 1, 1940. He preceded her in death in July
1970. She later married Cleon Dettmer in May 1984. He preceded her in death in
March 2006. She was a telephone operator for Woodston Rural Telephone.
Survivors include a son, Leon Welker, Stockton; two daughters, Arlyne Maddy,
Salina, and Kathryn Couch, Wilson; twin brothers, Cleo Delaney and Cletus
Delaney, Osborne; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Catholic Church,
Stockton; burial in Woodston Cemetery.

Services for Paul A. Conger, age 58, of Stockton, formerly of Woodston will
be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home in
Stockton with Reverend Lyle Miller officiating. Paul passed away Wednesday, May
21, 2008 at his home in Stockton. He was born December 18, 1949 in Smith Center, Kansas the son of John and Wilma
(Blecha) Conger. He graduated from Woodston High School and from Beloit Vo-Tech
with a degree in heavy equipment operating. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War
serving in the Navy. Paul was a cattleman (which he called his girls) in the Woodston area and had
his own silage cutting business. He was a life member and past commander of the
Monroe-Taylor-Barnes V.F.W. Post #8873 in Stockton, raising horses, and
collecting guns.
Survivors include his parents John and Wilma Conger of Woodston; daughter Jana
Conger of Stockton; sons John wife Tina Conger of Hays, Jake wife Crissy of
Kanorado, Kansas; brother Grant Conger of Stockton; 5 grandchildren Cody,
Colter, Jeston, Chase, and Kya.
Burial will be in the Ash Rock Cemetery near Woodston with military honors
provided by the Monroe-Taylor Barnes V.F.W. Post #8873. Visitation will be from
11 - 8 Friday and from 9 - 1:30 Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial

homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Jim Hoover, Hutchinson; a sister, Norma Strunk,
Wichita; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery,
Phillipsburg.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday,
both at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schmidtberger, 83, Victoria, died Wednesday, May 21,
2008, at her home. She was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Zurich to Tobie and Emma (Plante) Hamel. She married Raphael "Ralph" Schmidtberger on Jan. 25, 1944, in Hyacinth. He
preceded her in death Aug. 7, 1973. She was a homemaker and worked at Travenol
Labs, Hays, for 17 years. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella,
Victoria.
Survivors include six sons, Raphael Schmidtberger, Ellis, Stephen
Schmidtberger, Victoria, John Schmidtberger, Garland, Texas, Tobias
Schmidtberger, Topeka, and Mark and Gregory Schmidtberger, both of Lawrence;
five daughters, Anna Graber, Topeka, Margaret Tappan, Bethalto, Ill., Therese
Suelter, Brookville, Agnes Sander, Hays, and Mary Naillieux, Valparaiso, Ind.; a
daughter-in-law, Paula (Schmidtberger) Donley, Liberal; her mother, Colby; a
sister, Norma Bicker, Auburn; a brother-in-law, Alvin R. Schmidtberger,
Victoria; 37 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; a son, Joseph Schmidtberger; and two
brothers, Leo and Cleo Hamel.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church; burial
in the church cemetery, Victoria.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church and from 8:30 to
9:45 a.m. Saturday at Cline's Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a Daughters of Isabella rosary
at 7:30 p.m.

Survivors include three sons, Guy Rector, Sparks, Nev, Al Rector,
Farmington, N.M., and David Rector, Couer d'Alene; a brother, Fred Koehler,
Plainville; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several
great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial service was March 13 at English Funeral Chapel, Couer d'Alene.

Lee Odle, 81, Stockton, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at his home. He was born Sept. 17, 1926, to Berten and Sophia (Trimble) Odle. He graduated
from Stockton High School. He married Aloha Ashley on July 13, 1946, in Phillipsburg. He was owner of
the Comfort Motel which included a Phillips 66 gas station. He was a Korean War
veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Kevin Odle, Ellsworth; a
daughter, Marta Johnston, Stockton; a brother, Gale Odle, McPherson; two
sisters, Grace Turnbull, Stockton, and Nellie Barth, Topeka; and two
grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Stockton Cemetery .

Highland and Derby, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, in Waxahachie, Texas. She was born Aug. 25, 1915, in rural Waldo to Gilbert and Grace (Winder)
Elliott. She was a 1933 graduate of Paradise High School. She married L. Edward Hutchcraft on June 25, 1936, in Russell. He preceded
her in death March 26, 1987. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Theodore E., Highland, and Douglas E., Greeley;
two daughters, Marlene D. Phillips, Mulvane, and Delores A. Hocker, Midlothian;
a brother, W. Keith Elliott, Natoma; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren;
and six step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren and
step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson and a great-grandson.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Mount Herman Cemetery, near
Paradise.

Va. She married Kenton Watts Casad on Aug. 27, 1948, in Richmond, Va. She was a

State College. She married R. J. "Jim" Zeigler on Aug. 15, 1991, in Codell. She was a
substitute teacher.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Doran Zeigler, Hill City;
a daughter, Tamra Bowman, Olathe; two sisters, Geraldine Davenport, San Antonio,
and Genette Keas, Plainville; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Nelson Kirk Zeigler, in 1979.

(Meier) Bollig. She married Lionel W. Havlas on Sept. 12, 1942, in Olathe. He preceded her in
death Nov. 23, 1989. She later married Thomas Parke in 1991. He preceded her in
death in 2007. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of
Isabella, Eagle's Auxiliary, Sisters of Survivorship and Sunflower Polka Club,
all of Hays.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Noll, Hays and Theresa McCarthy,
Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Havlas, in 2007.

Bingham. He married Jeannie Lee Webb on Jan. 21, 1960, in Topeka. She preceded him in
death May 2, 2004. He was self-employed by the family business, C A Electric. He
served in the Navy Reserve Construction Battalion Detachment.
Survivors include three sons, Allan Gene and Aaron Wade, both of Plainville,
and Clark H., Topeka; two daughters, Trina Raylea Davidson, Russell, and
Kimberly Ann Reynolds, Carbondale; three brothers, Jack, Phoenix, and Sylvan and
Kenneth, both of Topeka; three sisters, Dorothy Sayles, Evelyn Barngrover and
Carolyn Ralph, all of Topeka.
He was preceded in death by two granddaughters.

school in Enid, Okla., in 1952. She married Merlin L. Meyers on March 20, 1960, in Woodston. He preceded her
in death April 29, 1969. She later married Delbert D. Deschner on Nov. 27, 1970,
in Natoma. She worked at hospitals in Stafford, Wichita and Plainville.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Michael L. Meyers, Topeka;
five step-children, Michael Deschner, Scott City, Bruce Deschner, Topeka, Kim
Davis, Manhattan, Brad Deschner, Great Bend, and Lori Wangsgard, Wichita; two
sisters, Katie Corwin, Plainville, and Margorie Martin, Orlando; 10
grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Fenton was born July 16, 1912, in Rooks County, KS. He married Martha Edith
Harbour on June 19,1937 in Ellis, KS. He got a job with the Union Pacific
Railroad and moved to Kansas City, KS where he was a resident from 1940 until
2002 when he moved to Emporia to live with his son, William Selbe. He was an
active member of Stephens Memorial United Methodist Church, a cub scoutmaster
and one of the few registered male Girl Scouts for the Santa Fe Trail Council of
the Girl Scouts for many years. He was known as "Mr. Camp Tongawood" for his
support of the Girl Scout camp near Tonganoxie, KS.
Fenton was preceded in death by his wife in 1994. He is survived by two
brothers, Charles and Jack Selbe, Plainville, KS, three daughters, Marjorie
Christy, Gladstone, MO, Betty Selbe, Kansas City, KS, and Jerre Roller, Garden
City, MO, one son, William Selbe, Emporia, KS, 9 Grandchildren and 14
Great-Grandchildren.

Niermeier. He graduated from Atwood High School. He married Vera Schoen on June 11, 1950, in Downs. He was the owner of the
Culligan Water Conditioning, Stockton, from 1952 until retirement in 1980. He
was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, J. D. Niermeier, Depauw, Ind.;
two daughters, Debra Niermeier, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Linda Ireton,
Bennington; a brother, Wilbur Niermeier, Morristown, S.D.; five grandchildren;
and two great- grandchildren.

2008, at Redbud Village, Plainville. She was born Sept. 21, 1902, near Zurich to Charles and Melvina "Vina"
(Stithem) Pywell. She married Vernon R. Sutor on June 6, 1923. He preceded her in death in
1931. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Winifred Palmberg, Palco, and Lorene Hamit,
Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, Gordon Pywell, Plainville; 22 grandchildren; 35
great- grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Sutor, two daughters, Marion
Cooper, and Norma Lee Blevins, and two grandsons.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Palco United Methodist Church,
Palco; burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, near Palco.

She married Donald Dean Rock on June 6, 1946, in Englewood, Colo. He preceded

his uncles, Ernie and Jack Beals. He graduated from Plainville High School. He married Norma Simms on March 2, 1945, in Hays. He owned and operated
Bryant Trailer Sales, Hays. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War
II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and
American Legion, all of Hays.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Ernie Bryant and wife, Pam,
Hays; a daughter, Lori Chand and husband, Nisar, Amarillo, Texas; eight

VICTORIA
Dean Boeckner, 73, died March 29 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. Born
Feb. 3, 1935, at Hesston, he was the son of Daniel G. and Florence (Holdeman)
Boeckner. He married Marjorie Loreg on March 15, 1958. He worked in the oil
fields for many years in the Great Bend area and was a commercial electrician.
He moved to Victoria in 2000.
Mr. Boeckner was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Survivors include his former wife, Marjorie Boeckner of Hays; two sons, Dan
Boeckner of Great Bend and Dean Boeckner Jr., of Hays; five daughters, Thea
Boeckner, Tammie Acheson and husband David, Tanya Boeckner and Jessica Boeckner,
all of Hays, and Avea Mahan of Roeland Park; three brothers, Wilber Boeckner and
wife Dorothy of Moundridge, Robert Boeckner and wife Arleen of Macon, Miss., and

SEATTLE -- Beloved by all who knew her, Charlotte died at home in Seattle
on March 16, 2008. Charlotte and Walter (died February 2006) were long-time
residents of Salina, before moving to Seattle in 1996 to be near their son
Stephen and his family. Born April 17, 1918, in Woodston, Kansas, raised near
and in Gypsum. Married in 1938, settled in Salina after WWII. A devoted wife,
mother, and homemaker, Charlotte was a deeply spiritual person and an active
member of University Methodist Church for many years. Kind and gentle, a lover
of music and flowers, she will be greatly missed. The funeral was held in
Seattle on March 19, 2008. Charlotte is survived by Stephen (son); Sheryl Kipnis
(daughter-in-law); Hanna and Daniel King (grandchildren); and Ruth Williams

Hugh E. Meade, 98, Hays, formerly of Palco, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008,
at Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born July 19, 1909, in Palco to Harlan and Aseneth (Fesler) Meade. He married Zelma Marcotte on July 5, 1927, in Hays. She preceded him in death
in September 1982. He later married Marceline Dick in July 1984. She preceded
him in death. He was a postmaster of Palco and owned Oil Field Construction
Firm. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Zurich, a charter member of
Lion's Club, Palco. He was a former county commissioner of Rooks County and past
president of County Commissioners of Kansas.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorene Sleichter and Jean Berland, both of
Hays; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 11
great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Marion Meade and Harlan Meade.

Funeral services for Vivian E. Ganoung, age 77, of rural Plainville will be
11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Plainville
with Reverend Barbara Patterson officiating. Mrs. Ganoung passed away Saturday,
March 1, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Victoria, Kansas. She was born Vivian Ellen Shaffer on September 6, 1930 on the family farm
near Waldo, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Lola (Dunkel) Shaffer. She
graduated from Russell High School in 1948. The next 3 months were spent on the
family farm helping her mother. She then began working at the Home State Bank in
Russell where she was an employee for the next 5 years. In 1953 she moved to
Kansas City where she was employed at a bank until 1955. She married Herman Ganoung, Jr. on May 8, 1955 in Waldo, Kansas. They had
four children Craig, Rick, Robyn, and Patti. They made their home on a farm S. E. of Plainville where she was a housewife
and mother. Vivian was very involved with school and was a 4-H leader for many
years and was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist
Women and later the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary, the Priscilla Arts
Club, and the Stitch and Chatter all in Plainville. She loved to travel and even
made a trip to Japan and Europe. She enjoyed baking and was known and loved for
her hand baked goodies she brought to the hospital and to bake sales for her
church and also baked wedding cakes for many weddings. Vivian and Herman enjoyed
square dancing and were charter members of the Swing-N-Wheels Square Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons Craig Ganoung of Eagle Rock, Missouri, Rick
Ganoung of Plainville, Kansas; two daughters Robyn and husband Kevin Karlin of
Victoria, Kansas, Patti and husband Don Dopita of Zurich, Kansas; two sisters
Agnes Sims of Headville, Kansas, and Pat and husband Lloyd Quinn of Salina,
Kansas; and sister-in-law Carol Shaffer of Waldo, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 10
great grandchildren and many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by
her husband Herman, grandson Cody Ganoung, her parents, sisters Louise Booth,
Wilma Johnson, Betty Funk, and Fern Shaffer; brother Charles Shaffer; 2 half
brothers, Lloyd and Earl Shaffer; brothers-in-law Glenn Booth, Larry Sims, Lamar
Johnson, Clyde Funk, Raymond Ganoung; and sister-in-law Kalita Kirkindoll.
Burial will be in the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8
Thursday, 9-8 Friday at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel and from 10 - service
time Saturday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the United
Methodist Church, the Rooks County Health Center Hospital Auxiliary, or to the
Hays Medical Center Home Health and Hospice and may be sent in care of the
Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, 409 S. Cochran, Plainville, Kansas 67663.

Florence F. Nichols, 84, Hays, formerly of Stockton, Schoenchen and
Kremmling, Colo., died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Hays Good Samaritan Center. She was born May 1, 1923, in Klickitat County, Washington to John L. and Opal
J. (Kish) Cook. She married Wallace L. "Wally" Nichols on Sept. 14, 1945, in Fairplay, Colo.
He preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1980. She was a cook at the grade and high
school in Emett, Onega Nursing Home and Kremmling Hospital.
