Rep.
Schwartz Appointed to Compact
April 21, 2004 – Topeka
Representative Sharon Schwartz (R-Washington)
was appointed to the Kansas-Nebraska Big Blue River Compact Administration
by Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
“I’m very pleased with the recent appointment,” stated
Schwartz. “I have always been committed to preserving Kansas’ natural
resources and bettering our environment. Being on the Big Blue River
Compact allows me to do both.”
The Big Blue River Compact is charged with the tasks
of promoting interstate cooperation, equitable apportionment and orderly
development of the waters of the Big Blue River Basin, and it promotes an
active water pollution abatement program. The compact also has provisions
requiring a sufficient amount of water flow to reach the state line from
both the Big and Little Blue Rivers between May and October.
“Sharon’s new appointment doesn’t surprise me,”
commented House Majority Leader Clay Aurand. “She is more knowledgeable
about natural resources issues than anyone else in the legislature. I
expect Sharon to play as vital a role on the compact as she does in the
legislature”
In the House, Schwartz serves as the chairman of the
Agriculture and Natural Resources Budget Committee and as a member of the
Appropriations Committee. Additionally, she serves on the Environment
Committee, Agriculture Committee, and the Joint Committee on Administrative
Rules and Regulations.
