Special contests add competetive fun to the Haskell County Fair!
CONTEST INFO: Read on for dates, times, rules, and entry information.
- $100 CONTEST -- CHOCOLATE CAKE CONTEST {NEW!}
- Tuesday, July 24
- Enter 9:00 -- 11:30am in the Open Class building
- RULES:
- Each person is limited to one entry.
- Each entry must be made by the participant.
- Cakes should be made from scratch -- no boxed mixes or prepared frostings, please.
- Each entry will consist of one 9"x13" cake.
- Enteries should be placed on a plate or covered cardboard or in a cake box.
- Entries will be judged on appearance and taste.
- Participants must submit their recipes (cake and frosting) on index cards. Recipes may be released for use and publication.
- Cakes will be served along with ice cream at the ice cream contest.
- No age groups
- Prizes: 1st = $100.00; 2nd = $50.00; 3rd = $25.00
- HAY BALE DECORATING CONTEST
- Pre-register by Friday, July 20, call 675-8176
- Decorating: Monday, July 23, 9:00am-5:00pm
- Judging: Tuesday, July 24, 2:00pm
- RULES:
- The hay bale contest is open to all Haskell County 4-H Clubs, community or school organizations.
- The Fair Board will provide one (1) round bale for each group participating in the contest.
- Bales can be placed on their sides or stood on end.
- Decorations should be weather and wind proof.
- Decorations may not be removed from bales before Friday, July 27 at 7:00pm.
- Entries will be judged on the use of the 2012 Fair Theme "Bushels, Bales, & Tails," eye appeal, construction, use of material and creativity.
- No age groups
- Prizes: 1st = $100.00; 2nd = $50.00; 3rd = $25.00
- DECORATED BALL CAP CONTEST {NEW!}
- Tuesday, July 24
- Enter in the Open Class Building, 9:00-11:30am
- RULES:
- Contestants may enter one creation by decorating a ball cap and giving the creation a name.
- Any type of ball cap may be used. Business-type caps may be used but the business logo must be covered with decoration.
- Entries will be exhibited in the Open Class building throughout the fair.
- The design much incorporate the fair theme, "Bushels, Bales, & Tails."
- Entries in all age divisions must be created by the entrant.
- Please mark name on the entry where they are not visible.
- Age groups: 8 & Under, 9-17 Years, and 18 years and over.
- Prizes: 1st = $50.00; 2nd = $25.00; 3rd = $10.00
- HOMEMADE ICE CREAM CONTEST
- Tuesday, July 24
- Enter 5:45 to 6:30 pm
- Judging begins at 6:45pm.
- Enter your best homemade ice cream (any flavor) to be judged and then shared with the public. Entries may be pre-entered by calling the Fair Office (675-8176). Pre-entry is not necessary, but we would like an idea of how many entries to expect. Juding will be based on Flavor, Appearance, and Texture.
NO RECIPES WITH RAW EGGS, PLEASE!

- $50 COTTON CONTEST
- Sponsored by Northwest Cotton Growers Co-op of Moscow, Kansas
- Enter: Tuesday, July 24 at the Open Class Clothing Department, 9:00 - 11:30am
- RULES:
- Entrants in the Open Class Clothing Department (Dept. II) who enter either clothing or other article made of 100% cotton will be eligible for a separate $50 prize from the Cotton Growers Co-op.
- Article will be judged on construction and workmanship.
- Articles such as quilts may have material other than cotton used for batting or trim or other decoration, but the remainder of the fabric must be 100% cotton.
- Entries in all age divisions must have been made by the entrant.
- Age Categories: Youth: 18 and under; Adult: 19 and over.
- Prizes: 1st=$50 in each age division
RODEO CONTESTS FOR THE KIDS
Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, July 26 at the rodeo
Area youth can get into the action at the Haskell County Fair Rodeo
again this year by entering the "Calf Scramble" and/or the Junior Girls Barrel Race.
There is no pre-registration for these events. The Calf Scramble involves area
children in two age groups: 7-10 yrs. and 11-14 yrs. Junior Barrel Racing is open to
area girls ages 5-14, but they must be able to ride unassisted by an adult. Parents
with children interested in these fun events should attend the rodeo.
Participation prizes will be awarded each night.
PEDAL TRACTOR PULL
Saturday, July 28
12:30 at the City Park
Coordinated by Haskell County Farm Bureau
Children can pedal their way to the State Fair by entering the Farm Bureau Pedal Tractor Pull.
The contest will be on Saturday at the City Park. There is no pre-registration necessary
for this event, but parents should accompany their children to the pedal pull. Medals for first, second
and third in each age level from 4 years to 12 years will be awarded. All first and second place
winners are eligible to compete at the State Fair. No entry fee; Free pop for all participants.
