Library History

by: Friday Reading Club Members

The Thayer Library was originated by the Friday Reading Club in April 1896. The club itself was organized in 1894 and federated in 1899.

At first, an upstairs room was used, then  later a small building where the water tower now stands. The club bought the old bank building in 1920 for $900.00. Money was raised by dinners, food sales, lectures, the sale of 2,000 Friday Reading Club cook books, and other social gatherings. Library cards were sold and people were encouraged to donate books to enlarge the library. The library started with 24 books donated by the Friday Reading Club ladies, and had grown to 1,500 books when it opened at its new location. The library now has 9,545 books and 86 videos.  An additional area was donated by the city in 1999 in order to expand the Library. The cost of enclosing this area was done through a government grant, liquor tax revenue from the County, local donations, help from the G.F.W.C.,  Thayer Friday Reading Club and Friends of the Library. The new room is used for young adults to study, display art work, play chess,   Library board meetings, Friends board meetings, and other group activities and programs. It is also used to shelve books for junior and senior high school students. A monthly newsletter has been published within the last few years and  we hope to publish it on this site soon. We would like to encourage you to read our local newsletter and to visit us here at the Thayer Library.  We hope to have the "Neighborly News" on our website soon.
