The Bell and Whistle Newsletter is sent to all members bi-monthly. Initially its intent was to inform supporters of the progress in moving and remodeling the Depot and to gather memories of the school, community, and railroad. The newsletter continues in this capacity but now primarily serves as a source for first-hand accounts of events occurring in the Bancroft community from its early days, as a chronicler of railroad fact and lore, and as an informant of upcoming events. Members are encouraged to send their anecdotes, essays, and other writings to be included in the newsletter. Past issues have included the following topics: Language of the Rails - Definitions and explanations of railroad terms Hobos' Life Styles and their Language Different Kinds of Smokestacks An Essay on the Use of the Common Dish Towel The 1894 First and Only Bank Robbery in Bancroft History of the Bancroft Community Church The Many Names for Bancroft A Search for Disappearing Depots Memory of the Digging of the City Well Christmas Memories, Including Decorating a Firebush Christmas Tree A Balloon Rider with No Basket Anyone joining the Bancroft Preservation Association receives the newsletters. Cost is $5.00 per year. Checks should be made to the Bancroft Preservation Association and mailed c/o PO Box 126, Tecumseh, KS. 66542 |
