Observe the flower and determine the size of the outer parts.
Flowers with outer parts longer than 1/4 inch (conspicuous flowers) proceed to I.

Flowers with small outer parts usually shorter than 1/4 inch (inconspicuous flowers) proceed to II.

I. Conspicuous flowers. Flowers with outer parts longer than 1/4 inch.

A.Open faced flowers. The outer parts are sepals or petals or a combination of sepals and petals or petal-like structures.

B. Open faced heads. Heads with ray flowers and disk flowers, or ray flowers, or disk flowers.

C. Pea flower. A flower with one large broad upper petal, two similarly shaped side petals, and two lower petals sometimes united. They resemble the garden pea.

D. Different flower. A flower that does not fit any of the previous descriptions.

II. Inconspicuous flowers. Flowers with small outer parts usually shorter than 1/4 inch.

A. Flowers in round clusters.

B. Flowers in long clusters
