Thank you for your recent letter expressing your concern regarding the routes under consideration for the completion of the South Lawrence Trafficway.
The purpose and need of the project, as stated in the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, is to reduce present and future congestion on 23rd
Street and on Iowa Street. The alignments south of the Wakarusa River were studied and eliminated because they did not meet the purpose and need. An alignment
south of the Wakarusa River would only attract through trips and would not benefit the internal traffic flow on 23rd Street and Iowa Street.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is assisting in the administration of the South Lawrence Trafficway project on behalf of Douglas County. If you have additional
