JAS Position Statement on South Lawrence Trafficway

"The board of the Jayhawk Audubon Society has voted to join the list of plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This decision was precipitated by the Corp's approval of a wetland permit allowing KDOT to route the South Lawrence Trafficway through the Haskell-Baker Wetlands. The lawsuit claims that the Environmental Impact Statement, which evaluated options for the completion of the K-10 corridor around Lawrence, is inadequate. We agree and maintain that no serious evaluation of alternatives has been completed to date. The decision of the JAS board to join the lawsuit is part of our continuing efforts, now over two decades long, to preserve and protect the Haskell-Baker Wetlands."
