As I prepared to discuss The Learning Tree with the Book Club in February, I used
almost all of the resources on the KCFB website. The Discussion Questions are very good. We didn't get around to every question - lots of conversation with the ones we did use. They certainly added to our understanding of the novel - and the
man who wrote it. I made copies of the Timeline and Bibliography and Biography pages for everyone to review. Those pages sparked additional discussion. We kicked off the whole event on January 29 by showing the film. Showing the film first
didn't spoil the book for any of us. Since
Parks was also responsible for the film, that in itself was a good talking point. The Learning Tree was a good choice for the first one book/one state project for adults. We are now looking forward to Ann Parr's visit to our library in March.
Many of the adults are also interested in hearing Ann's story of Gordon Parks.

What are your plans for Kansas Day? Maybe, like
Annette Smith at Hutchinson Public Library, they include kicking off Kansas Reads...The Learning Tree by Gordon Parks.
The library
will open registration on January 29, 2007 for Kansas' first one book, one state reading project for adults. |
Registrants will get a free copy of the book and a program guide, and registration is at Hutchinson Public
Library and the Hutchinson/Reno County Arts & Humanities Council office.
The project in Hutchinson doesn't stop then. On February 9 KU English professor
J. Edgar Tidwell will present "Gordon Parks' Learning Tree Experience" at Hutchinson Community College, and on February 22 Lemuel Sheppard from Pittsburg, KS, will perform his "Musical Tribute to Gordon Parks" at HCC at noon and again at 7 pm at the Flag Theater.
Public discussions of the novel will take place at the library on March 8, 15, and 29. On April 5 and April 7 there will be a screening of The Learning Tree motion picture in the library auditorium. A brown bag lunch in the library on April 19 will feature Jill Warford, director of the Gordon Parks Center for Culture and Diversity at Fort Scott Community College presenting "An Overview of Gordon Parks' Life and Career."
And an amateur photo contest in remembrance of Gordon Parks encourages young
adults and adults to submit b&w or color photos March 15-April 1, with judging at the end of April.
Kaite Mediatore Stover, Head of Readers & Circulation Services, Kansas City MO
Public Library and one of the original Kansas Reads committee members wrote: "I can't think of a better book to pull all the readers in the state of Kansas together. The Learning Tree will encourage all readers to talk about books, their
experiences, the past, the future, but most of all--TALK."

Wichita Area Technical College will be holding at least three (3) book discussions with The Learning Tree. Faculty,
staff, and students are all involved. We are really excited about this and the participants have been begging for the book so they can read on the snowy days. |
We will be giving out bookmarks that promote the
dates and times and we will have a display up from Kansas Day to April that will honor Gordon Parks. I am also encouraging participants to read A Hungry Heart to know more about Gordon Parks, himself. These books will then be available for
faculty to use in the classrooms or for Interlibrary Loan as a book discussion kit. We are getting excited about our 3 book discussions. We ordered one of Gordon Park’s prints from Fort Scott to hang up and we have about 20 people signed up
for the discussions.
