Kansas Reads: The Learning Tree by Gordon Parks is a statewide project that encourages Kansas adults to read, discuss and experience the same book.  The project is sponsored by the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library and promoted by Kansas libraries, bookstores, and others from January 29 through April 30, 2007.

  RESOURCES -- Program Ideas

  • Book discussions – To find discussion leaders, check local colleges, universities, or high schools. Hold discussions at different times and locations to include as many participants as possible. 

  • Bring in a speaker or performer to talk about Gordon Parks, his life, and his art.   

  • Hold showings of Parks’ films. 

  • Hold a photography contest and/or exhibit for local photographers. 

  • Have a local photographer discuss his/her works and/or hold photography classes. 

  • Hold a panel discussion to discuss race relations in your community. 

  • Host a program featuring readings from Parks’ poetry and other literary works. 

  • Hold a poetry writing contest. 

  • Partner with other agencies and organizations to provide programming.
