Boorstin Center for the Book Award

 

The Boorstin Center for the Book Award, is supported by an endowment established by Daniel J. Boorstin and his wife, Ruth. Dr. Boorstin created the Center for the Book in 1977 when he was Librarian of Congress. The Boorstin award, presented annually since 1997, recognizes and supports achievements of specific state centers for their contributions to the overall national program and objectives.

June 28-29, 2008 -- 23rd Annual Tallgrass Writing Workshop (Registration begins 8:30 am Saturday June 28) -- Location: Emporia State University -  Sponsored by ESU Center for Great Plains Studies, ESU Division of English &  ESU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This event features award-winning writers, timely topics on the publishing industry, a networking reception and individual critiques. The keynote speakers are Richard Uhlig, a Kansas native whose acclaimed first novel, Last Dance at the Frosty Queen, was inspired by his high school years in Herington, and Phillip Finch, a verteran author and journalist whose forthcoming book is Raising the Dead, a true story about a cave diving tragedy. Other speaker include NY Times bestselling author Antonia Felix; travel writer Julianne Couch; Max McCoy; and Don Coldsmith.

Lane – Location: Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 W. 10th Topeka, KS  66604 -- Sponsored by: Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library present the Author Meets the Subject program featuring Robert Collins--author of a new biography of James H. Lane, first Kansas senator, Civil War soldier, and politician--and Tim Rues--site curator of the Constitution Hall state historic site at Lecompton, re-enacting the role of Lane. Collins will interact with re-enacted Jim Lane to explore Territorial and Civil War Kansas history. Join us for a fun and informational Sunday afternoon.

September 27, 2008 -- National Book Festival – Sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress – Location:  National Mall, Washington DC, 101 Independence Ave. SE, Washington DC, 20540-4020  -- The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress has confirmed Saturday, September 27, 2008 as the date for the 2008 National Book Festival. It will again be on the National Mall in Washington DC from 10:00am through 5:00pm. This year the available space has been diminished from seven blocks to four due to the National Park Service "re-seeding" of grass on the Mall. Details of pavilions on site, programs, and other issues relating to the National Book Festival are being discussed.
