LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE: is a reading and writing initiative for young people grades 4-12. The letters are written to authors, living or from the past, whose books have impacted the students’ lives. Entries are at three levels: grades 4-5; grades 6-8; and grades 9-12. Letters About Literature is open to public, private, and home school students. It is a unique learning opportunity, combining reading with composition, meeting curriculum indicators in current state standards, and the top essayists on each competition level will receive a cash award and a Target gift card. The first place winner in Kansas will advance to national judging.

Letters About Literature is promoted through school library media centers, public library children’s departments, the Fellows of the Kansas Center for the Book, educators in public and private schools, and other interested persons. The intent is to reach libraries, classrooms in public and private schools, home schoolers, and any young Kansans of elementary, middle school or high school age.
