About the Kansas Center for the Book
The Kansas Center for the Book is a state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of
Congress. The Kansas Center for the Book affiliated with the national Center for the Book in 1987, and was hosted and headquartered at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library from then until 2005, when it moved to the State Library of Kansas.
It is now a non-profit, tax-exempt program of the State Library.

Fifty states and the District of Columbia are now affiliated with the national Center for the Book, but
Kansas was among the earliest. With the move to the State Library of Kansas came new governance, administration, programming, and funding.
The mission of the Kansas Center for the Book is to stimulate public interest in the educational and cultural role of the book; authorship and writing;
literacy; and the promotion of reading and libraries.

Location
The Kansas Center for the Book today is headquartered at the State Library of Kansas. However, it is not so
much a location as an ideal. The Kansas Center for the Book intends to be the center of the promotion and fostering of the printed word in our state. It is our Center for the Book.
Board of Affiliates
The Kansas Center for the Book is advised by its Board of Affiliates, composed of representatives from Library and Library
System Affiliates, Commercial Affiliates (booksellers and publishers), and Organizational Affiliates (agencies and organizations). All Affiliates of the Kansas Center for the Book invest funds in the operation of the Center. The Board advises the State
Librarian of Kansas and the Director of the Kansas Center for the Book regarding policies and activities of the Center.
Fellows
Individuals may become Fellows of the Kansas Center for the Book to help promote the mission and programs of the Center. The
Fellows group consists of authors, publishers, librarians, booksellers, educators, and community leaders. Becoming a Fellow helps the KCFB promote reading and literary efforts, foster more literary activity in Kansas, and increase awareness of these
activities.
Fellows have helped at the Kansas table at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC; served as judges for the Letters
About Literature project; served on committees of the KCFB; assisted with local arrangements for KCFB projects; provided invaluable consulting and assistance for special purposes; and the group provides a pool of volunteers for future identified special
projects.
