What: Mock Pura Belpré Award Session When: January 3, 9:30-1:00 Where: Antioch Branch, Johnson County Kansas Library & OPAL The Pura Belpré Award is presented by the Association for Library Services to Children and REFORMA (The National Association for Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking) each year beginning in 2008. Previously this award was presented every two years. The award recognizes excellence in the areas of literary merit and outstanding illustration in books for children and young adults by authors and illustrators who identify themselves as Latino. The selection committee chair alternates between the Association of Library Services for Children (ALSC) and REFORMA and committee members consist of 3 members representing ALSC and 3 members representing REFORMA. Heartland REFORMA member, Jean Hatfield from the Wichita Public Library, served as the chair of the committee in 2007/08. She will lead a Mock Pura Belpré Award Session with attendees participating as the mock committee on January 3 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Anyone interested in participating or observing is invited to attend at the Antioch Branch of the Johnson County Kansas Library, 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway (corner of Antioch and Shawnee Mission Parkway), 913-261-2300. Participants are encouraged to read as many books on the suggested list as possible in order to discuss the merits of each book. Books under consideration for this Mock Belpré session are listed at left. The session will be available over OPAL for those unable to attend in person. Selected text or illustrations from each title will be presented in PowerPoint to facilitate discussion. For first time OPAL participants see the participant guide prior to the session.
