Profiling Your Community
Instructions for Worksheets 1A and B
What do you already know about your community?
This exercise is designed to help you discover and think about what you already know
about your community.
[Part 1] Each member of the planning group should individually select either Worksheet 1A or Worksheet 1B (Allow 20 minutes for this activity):
- Worksheet 1A asks you to draw a picture of your community. Details you may want to include are railroad tracks, highways, parks, lakes, schools, the downtown area, etc. What would the people in the picture be doing in your town? This is a quick drawing so don't worry about drawing to scale.
- Worksheet 1B asks you to write a paragraph about your community. You can do this either as a narrative or as a list of your community's features. What comes to mind when you first think about your town?
[Part 2] Now come together as a group and consider the following discussion questions along with any other questions that may emerge during your discussion:
- Were all of your community pictures and paragraphs alike or very similar?
- What are the differences in your descriptions and paragraphs?
- How do multiple images and perspectives of your community help you describe your community more completely?
- What is distinctive or special about your community?
- What did you discover you don't know about your community?
- What information do you need to fill in the gaps and where do you think you can find it?
