The NEKLS Workshop

Each library participating in the workshops was required to send a "team" of three people. Ideally, this would include the library director, a board member, and a community volunteer. Teams were asked to bring a local phone book, a map of their community, and a calculator. The first workshop was a full day and participants worked through the first section of modules (Profiling Your Community).

The teams returned to their communities to complete work on their first group of worksheets and conduct at least one focus group. One month later, teams returned to "cluster" meetings, which were the second and final workshop sessions. Four cluster meetings were held in locations around the system. This accomplished two things: participants had to travel less distance to attend, and we were able to work with smaller groups.

At the "cluster" meetings the groups worked through the second section of the notebook: Vision, Goals and Objectives; Gathering the Stakeholders; Putting the Plan in Motion.

Teams once again returned to their communities and worked through the remainder of the process. Library boards were given approximately six to nine months to complete a plan and submit it to the system for review. One example of a plan from the Baldwin City Library has been included in this site.
