2001 Alumni Basketball Tournament

The 2001 Highland High School Alumni basketball tournament was held last weekend, March 23-24. As always, this event, which has taken place each year since 1985, proved highly successful, with many alumni participating. Proceeds from the tournament go to projects supported by the HHS Alumni Association.

In the men's older division, the teams of '84 & older, '85-'88 and '92 & '94 tied during round robin play, with 85-88 advancing in the tie-breaker. In the younger division, the team of '96-'97 came out the winner. In the championship, the youngsters (Chris Blevins, Stephen Blevins, Jeff Butrick (leading scorer), Jay Gormley (leading scorer), Wes Keller, Brad McCauley, Darin Peters, Will Simmons, Shane Smith, and Clint Windmeyer) came back from a large deficit to win, in overtime, over their elders (Brad Cluck, Paul Frakes, Jason Rockhold, Jeff Scott, Jason Taylor, Matt Twombly, Kevin Weis and Donnie Winters (leading scorer). Because of the quality of free throw shooting exhibited in the game, both teams were required to stay late to run wind sprints and practice at the stripe. Leading individual scorers in the tournament were Jerod Blanton (99), Travis Clary ('99), Brant Clary ('98) and Evan Dillman ('99).

In the ladies' division, the "experienced" team defeated the "youthful" group in three close games played on the full court. Samples of liniment, Ben gay and Tylenol were awarded to the winners. Leading individual scorers in the tournament were Andrea Collins ('99), Julie (Lackey) Franken ('93) and Jill (Walton) Johnson ('84).

Winners of the 3-point shooting contests were Andrea Collins (60%), repeating from last year, and Evan Dillman (70%).
