Preservation of Heritage
The Association has been very active in several projects aimed at preserving the heritage and history of Highland schools. In 2003, we designed; built and donated track record boards for placement in the school gymnasium (see the link on the main page for viewing photos). This project was funded from proceeds received over the years from the alumni basketball tournament and followed extensive research into the available information (coaches records, yearbooks, Videttes, etc.) to confirm and corroborate each record.
With the transition to the new school (Doniphan West Mustangs), all school colors and teams banners now in place must be removed. Currently, the Association is assisting the school board in determining an appropriate and lasting recognition for the most outstanding accomplishments of Bluestreak teams during the most recent time period. Our proposal is that these teams be recognized on a board, similar to the track record boards, for permanent placement in the school gymnasium. At the same time, Midway High School would be given equal opportunity and space for like recognition.
Because of the need to allow the new school its own identity, the available space for the accomplishments of the Bluestreaks and Eagles is limited. Accordingly, we have proposed that teams must meet strict guidelines to qualify for placement on the board, as follows:
From a larger perspective, the Association has had a history book in the planning stages for several years. Following the 1997 centennial reunion, we had hoped to compile and publish a “Centennial” book. With recent developments, it would now seem more appropriate to pursue a Highland High School history book.
This project is a monumental undertaking and will require a large volume of information and numerous volunteers. If you are interested in working on or contributing to this project, please contact any of the officers of the Association or Bill Noll (the younger). The goal is to compile as complete history as is possible in one volume. A partial list would include the following:
Some of this information is available from yearbooks (we have a complete set from 1964 to date), but much is not. Since many school records were lost in the 1975 fire, much will need to be obtained from alumni that may have access to class photographs, old yearbooks, school newspapers and similar items. Any assistance you may provide in connection with this project will be appreciated.
Each of the projects requires a monetary investment, as well, and donations are being sought to help with funding. Please consider contributing to these worthwhile undertakings.
