Class of 1986

Jamee Butler Schroeder

I see that there is no such thing as the class of 1986, so thought I would send one in and maybe get one started.
Unfortunately I have no exciting, scandalous stories to contribute.

After graduating in 1986, I went to Fort Hays for a REALLY long time.  I graduated in '89 with an A.S. in what is
now called "Administrative Professional" and '93 in Elementary Education.  I taught my first year in Rushville, Nebraska.
For some reason I thought it would be good to get out of Kansas.  It was a true, one-room school house in rural northwest Nebraska.
(Yes, indoor plumbing)  In the county I worked in, there were still 13 rural schools, besides the 1A school in town.
I ended the year with 14 students in K, 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7.  (When I accepted the job, there were only to be 6 in 4 grades!)
The school was located in the foothills of the Badlands, really pretty country.  Our first snow was Sept. 10 and last was April 29.
Someday I should publish the journal I kept.  It includes such events as the 1st grader at sharing time telling how for supper
their Dad shot the turkey that was in their yard last night, and they got to play with the head!  The good thing about those
little schools is that the teachers, at that time anyway, got to teach.  I had 2 visits from the Superintendent of Rural Schools
and did have an Aide when the K. students were there.  I have lost contact and doubt that the school is open any more.

After a year of homesickness, I moved to Larned and worked for Tri-County Services as a Preschool/Elementary Speech
Therapy Assistant.  I met my husband, Bryan, on a blind date.  We got married in '95 and I moved to Wichita where I worked
as a Speech Assistant at Rainbows United, a center for special needs children age birth to 5.  In '98 I quit "working" to stay
home with our new baby girl, Katie, now 5.  (I actually take credit for cloning the first baby, because she looks and acts just like me.)
In '00 we had Michael or "Mikey" as he is called, almost 3.  He was born with 4 dimples and knows how to use them.

My husband works in medicine and attends college.  He is a Staff Sgt. and Medic in the Army National Guard and was gone
for most of '02 when deployed overseas.
