Beloit, Kansas, county seat of
Mitchell
County, is located in the Solomon River valley in north central Kansas. The beauty of the valley is enhanced by the surrounding
Smoky Hills in the land of the Kansas Post Rock. Chautauqua Park, one of Kansas' prettiest, is located in a bend in the Solomon
River, and offers visitors a chance to enjoy this natural beauty.
The city is located on U.S. Highway #24,and State Highways #14, and #9 making it an easyplace to get to and from, although once here, youwon't want to leave. It's also well served by a railroadand trucking firms. Originally homesteaded in 1866 and incorporatedin 1872, Beloit began at the foot of Mill Street, onthe banks of the Solomon River, where the Beloit Mill was built. There a spring gushed forth and was a stopping place for Indians, soldiers, buffalo huntersand settlers on their way westward or looking for homesteads in the area. Nearby Waconda Springs was sacred to the Indians who once lived in the area. |
Beloit has many beautiful post rock buildings including St. John's Catholic Church and the Mitchell County Courthouse. The Little Red Schoolhouse on Highway # 24 offers a view of early education in north central Kansas. The Mitchell County Historical Museum captures the early day history of the communities in north central Kansas with four floors of displays.
While visiting Beloit you will see the community is a healthy mixture of the pioneer work ethic and spirit and moderntechnology. It is a hardworking community loaded with friendly involved individuals who use both modern farm equipmentand industrial tools as well as computers in their daily lives.

North Central Kansas Technical College
Beloit's North Central Kansas Technical College helps citizens keep up with the latest technology and offers Associate Degrees in seven fields. A natatorium is available for public use for a nominal fee.Since 1888, Beloit has been home to the Beloit Juvenile Correctional Facility, a valued part of the community and a strong foundation for the local economy.
