Solomon Valley Hospice
- (785) 738-3342 111 E. Court
Solomon Valley Hospice was started again November 1, 1997. Barbara Cashatt, RN., was hired as the director. As the idea was explored in the community, it was determined that there was a great deal of support for Hospice care similar to what the original Solomon Valley Hospice had provided until 1991. The new Solomon Valley Hospice, a department of the Mitchell County Hospital, took their first patient in December 1997. They were Medicare Certified on May 5, 1998.
They are structered with a Director of Volunteers, Pastoral Coordinator, Medical Director, Social Worker and RN.
They provide in-service programs at area nursing homes and hospitals, along with presentations for service organizations.
They have two hospice rooms in the hospital that are provided for the comfort of the family as well as the patient. The goal of hospice is for patients to remain at home if that is their wish. They are dedicated to the patients' needs, especially with pain and symptom management, as well as providing supportive services to the family, with bereavement counseling available up to a year after their loved one's death.
All funds donated to Solomon Valley Hospice remain in our local communities. All donations and memorials are tax deductible.

Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary
- (785) 738-2266
- 400 W. 8th
Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary celebrated its 30th Anniversary in May of 1996. The organization as it is today, started with a small group of women and has grown to 550 active members and 80 active volunteers.
Volunteer hours are spent in the Snack Bar and Gift Shop at the hospital, the reception desk as a pink lady, and in the Economy Shop at the Beloit Municipal Building.
Each fall, a Doll Clinic is given by the auxiliary and hospital staff. Around 200 kindergartners and first graders from Beloit, St. John's. Tipton, Waconda East, Glasco, Jewell and Sylvan Grove are given a tour of the hospital, including the Emergency, X-Ray, Physical Therapy, and Pediatric departments. They also receive an ambulance ride. This program helps to relax the child if
he/she does have to visit the hospital in the future as a patient. Over 10,000 hours are donated to these projects each year.
The Economy Shop brings in a profit of over $30,000 each year, thanks to the generosity of the citizens of Mitchell County who donate their time to work. All the merchandise is donated and all the help is volunteer. Money is also made in the Snack Bar and Gift Shop, from membership dues of $l per year, and from memorial donations.
Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary provides funds to Long Term Care each month for entertainment for the residents, and funds for scholarships for area students who are pursuing a medical career. Each year, a new project is donated to the hospital. Past projects have been remodeling of the main and long term care lobbies and main dining room, including new furniture for each of these areas; automatic doors in the main loboby, OPD entrance, and into surgery; a new exhaust system for surgery; new carpet in the main lobby; remodeling of all the nurses stations in the hospital and long term care; new charts and racks; new food delivery system which keeps the food hot or cold as needed; and remodeling of the front reception area.
These and many other projects have been paid for by the money made in the Economy Shop, Snack Bar, and Gift Shop.
The hospital auxiliary has donated many monetary items to the hospital throughout the years, but the most important donations are the volunteer hours donated by many throughout the county. We have volunteers from all over the area, Beloit, Tipton, Glen Elder, Cawker City, Jewell, and Simpson. We are always in need of more. We appreciate very much those that donate time, money or both to the citizens of Mitchell County.
