On June 9,1961, Winifred passed away and was laid to rest in the Bennington Cemetery. We had been married nearly fifty-three years. Since her passing I have been wed to Ruth G. Collins; we have been good friends for over fifty years. As the people have been so nice to me, I intend to spend the rest of my days here. Pretty hard to find nicer people than Ottawa Countians. WESSEL FAMILY HISTORY By Sue (Wessel) Quinn HOWARD HERBERT WESSEL,. son of Lydia and Richard Wessel, was born in 1862 at Canajobarie, New York, and when a boy of 7 journeyed with his parents to Sharon, Wisconsin, where he resided until 1884, when he moved further west and settled in Ottawa County, Kansas. When Mr. Wessel first came to Bennington, he was manager of the Creveling and Jensen Creameries. In 1907, he became a rural mail carrier out of Bennington and continued in this work for 21 years, until he was 65 years old when he was obligated to retire from this work. Duringthe later years of his life he worked occasionally at the Leidigh and Haven Lumber Co., Bennington, He passed away in 1940 at the age of 78. He was married in 1896 to Effie May Morgan, daughter of Levi and Martha Morgan, who was born in 1875, at Fort Scott, Kansas. At the age of six when her mother died, she went to live in the Kansas City vicinity and lived with her grandmother till she was 17 years old, When her grand-mother died, she was left without a home and at that time came to Bennington to live with her uncle and aunt, the Alex Pattons. Mr. Patton was the village blacksmith in Bennington. She lived with this family until she married H. H. Wessel in 1898. She passed away in 1943.
