- Unified School District #440, Bentley-Halstead, provides high quality education for the Bentley area students in grades kindergarten through High School. The district uses an "attendance center" concept, with the Bentley school housing all Kindergarten through third grade students of the entire district. The fourth through eighth grades attend at the Middle School in Halstead, as well as secondary students attending Halstead High School. Through this concept, students from across the district are blended at an earlier age instead of only for the upper levels, and primary students just beginning their impressions of school have a quieter, more sheltered environment of their own at the Bentley Primary School.
Known already as a leader in technology for schools of its size, each building of the district has staff workstations connected through a Novell network, and feature various software, district e-mail and shared CD-ROM capacity. All three district buildings offer various computer labs for use by students or staff, including access to the World Wide Web.
The district is overseen by a seven-member Board of Education, with input given by the district superintendent and the building principals. The board members, who work without compensation, serve staggered four year terms of office, and are elected by the district at large, representing member districts, with one at- large position.
The district area covers 130 square miles, and supports an average annual enrollment of 750 students. The district is a member of the Mid Central Activities Association for sports and other extracurricular competitions. Special education services are provided to all district buildings through an agreement with the Harvey County Special Education Cooperative.
Parent and patron involvement opportunities at the school include the Site Councils, Parent-Teacher Organizations, the Booster Club, School Board, Technology Committee, and general volunteer work available in each building.
For additional information, you may contact the USD 440 District Office, located in Halstead at 520 W. 6th St., by calling 1-316-835-2541, or the Bentley Primary School at 796-0210.
