Buffalo Fire Department (620) 537-8788 (Emergency only)
![]()
In around 1972 or 73, the citizens of Buffalo and surrounding area decided there was a real need for a new fire truck. From donations and whatever, money was raised to buy a 1974 Ford. That, with County Truck #8, was the town's fire protection.
In 1980, citizens started working on the community truck. This had a 1000 gallon tank, three new hoses and could pump water at 150 gallons per minute. At that time, it was set on a 1948 Dodge chassis. This was built in the garage of Dave Arnold at Main and Elm. Some citizens spent many hours, sometimes until two or three a.m. working on this project. Money for this truck was raised as a community project with a white elephant auction, Valentine dance, soup supper, and pancake feed. The Dodge was later replaced with a 1974 Chevy C60.In 1985, the State reduced the City's fire rating to eight.
In 1997, the City received a 1972 1000 gallon pumper from the City of Topeka. The new fire barn was constructed the same year, mainly through the generosity of Micro-Lite.
2/23/2006 Eric Eagle reports that 2 new stainless steel tanks have been purchased to replace older ones. This was done with considerable help from Chuck Splechter. Regular scheduled fire meetings are being held on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 2:00pm at city hall. A Fire Committee was recently formed to deal with projects and purchases and other matters pertaining to the fire department. This board meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm at city hall. **WATCH FOR UPCOMING EVENTS IN MARCH** Shotgun raffle and Spaghetti feed fundraiser.
