Dexter
is located in the beautiful wooded hills of southeastern Cowley
County [CL] on highway K-15. The town is on the side of the valley
overlooking Grouse Creek and some of the streets slope dramatically. An historical
marker south of town at US 166 and K-15 describes the discovery of helium
in the area in the early 1900s. There are historic
images online from the WSU library, and information about the early
history of Dexter from the 1883 Cutlers History of Kansas is also
available. Henry's Candies on K-15 in Dexter offers a chance
to see a candy factory in operation. Demonstrations are given on Sundays
