Jeff King State Representative visits Elk City

Jeff KingJeff King, State Representative, scheduled a visit to Elk City in January. He met people of Elk City for a "Listening" Session. This informal meeting began with Jeff seaking briefly on two topics of interest: he said that he was proud of how the First Responders in this area took care of things when the area experienced the flood during July 2007 and more recently the ice storm, but was disappointed in the state's response. He is working to sponsor bills aimed at relieving people during disasters. Secondly, Rep. King also discussed Wind Farms and energy problems in Kansas; he mentioned his concern that the state does not have an energy policy that is forward-looking. He hopes to be able to help sponsor bills that will address this lack.

Sunnyside School, District #24 organized in 1871 and was disorganized in 1946, burned on February 10, 2008 of unknown causes. It is sad when part of Elk City's past is gone. Travelers on highway 160 on the west end of Montgomery County could see this schoolhouse facing the east and almost expecting children's footsteps approaching after each sunrise. The land on which the schoolhouse was built was purchased for school purposes from W. D. Whelchel and wife Samantha in 1880, 9 years after the school was first held. The consideration was ten dollars and the provision that the land revert to its original owner or his assigns should it no longer be used for educational purposes. It has been standing on the north side of the highway all these years with some of the school items still inside. Someone went by the schoolhouse one day and all was well, a second person went by 20 minutes later and saw smoke. There was no electricity in the building and it was during the daytime hours. It is a mystery on how the fire was started. The building was completely destroyed, the flag pole still stands alone out front of the pile of rubble. The storm celler is still there or as it was called many years ago, the fraidy hole.
