    Old Settlers Day

Elk City was a bustle of activity, despite the weekend of rain, which didn't stop dedicated fair goers. Thursday morning various groups were setting up booths and Friday morning folks were busy entering the exhibits. As the rain began to fall Friday evening the activites were moved to the pavilion where the Queen, Prince and Princess were chosen. Those that entered into the contest received a nice big goodie bag. The pie auction began with Tony and Jerry as auctioneers, and the highest bid was made on a beautiful homemade raspberry pie. Between the auctioning off of the many pies, door prizes were handed out. The cake walk had two long tables of cakes to be won. Farm Bureau kids tractor pull was a part of the evening of fun.

Saturday morning started early with biscuits & gravy at the Christian Church. The Community Building was open for visitors; the exhibits were judged on Friday afternoon. The parade started at 10 a.m. in another downpour of rain, but soon slowed down to a good drizzle. The parade watchers were sitting in their cars or standing in the drizzle under the protection of their umbrella. The parade was as good as usual, consisting of many of the organizations entering floats, antique tractors, restored cars, kids floats and bikes, sheriff and fire equipment and the Elk Valley band which marched in the rain. The ICC cheer squad and Gus Jones equipment were added to the parade this year.

When the parade ended, some visited the exhibts in the Community Building, while others went to the Masonic Hall where the Eastern Star ladies served a nice lunch. The kids races were held on the main paved street instead of the ball field because of the mud problem. After kids races, everyone went to the ball field braving the mud for horseshoe pitching, volleyball, and basketball tournaments; the salsa contest closed out the afternoon of fun.

That evening the Bean Feed was well attended with the usual wonderful beans being served. Michele Knopick entertained the crowd until the talent show began. The fair drew to a close with the dance and the Black Widow Band.

    Church News

The new improvement The First Christian Church of Elk City did some renovations this summer. They added onto the annex of the church, making it quite a bit larger and changed the restrooms to be more handicap accessible. This is the part of the church where the biscuits and gravy breakfast was held at Old Settlers Day; the annual Turkey Supper, and all their activities during the year.

The Methodist Church is having their annual Fall Supper Oct. 11th, serving turkey, dressing & gravy, noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, jello salad, hot rolls, pie and drinks. You can eat in the church annex, come and get carry outs, or have the dinner delivered to your home.

The Methodist Church hosted a summer cookout in July. Though the temperature was hot, the cooks managed to grill the hamburgers and hotdogs outside. After dinner the group played Bingo and visited.

Vacation Bible School was held the end of July at the Church of the Nazarene. The theme this year was "Loving God; Serving Others". They had fun with cars and at the same time learned about the overhaul God wants to do in your hearts. Kids had their hot wheels ready to race.

    Poetry
Senior Class Poem taken from the first Elk City High School Annual "The PRIMA" in 1916
    Poem by Orlena Jenalia Myers

    Thinking and dreaming alone,
Of the sweet and wavering past,

    Of pictures so dearly cherished
    Because they could not last,

    Memories all hallowed and golden,
    And buried in our souls,

Of dreams and hopes and desires,
Along the path to our goals

The school days, Ah sacred memory,
Cherished and sweet as it be

Borne in the heart of the student
Over mountain, in valley or sea

    Those years counted in trio
Then seeming a life time in age

    But now when gone forever,
    Make but the title page

    Only the beautiful preface
Of a story book of life

A romance of love and adventure
    With moments of perilous strife

And those Elk City school days
    Are foundations carried thru

The stones of a mighty structure
Which will stand tried and true

Three years of work and labor,
    Three years of trials o'er

And yet, they held their sunshine,
And joy and mirth and more

    The Freshman year of learning
    That children don't grow wings

And when they enter High School
    They cease their childish things.

    Out of the Past

Taken from the first Elk City High School Annual "The PRIMA" in 1916

In the year 1889, when Kansas was struggling to care for her greatest crop of corn, Elk City offered her first course in Secondary school work.

From that time on, there has been a gradual extension till finally in 1913 the required number of teachers brought recognition by the University. Miss Pike and Miss Easley ably assisted Mr. Lewis at that time.

But the next year a lady was hired for full time in the High School and a Collegiate Course fully established. At that time our present haughty Seniors were small boys in knickers or wee girls in curls, feasting at tables not prepared for them and vexing their loving teachers in many odd and lovable ways.

Then in 1915, a great year for the school, with Miss Dickerman as assistant, two courses were offered one a regular College course and another looking toward training our young people for teachers. Both courses have been carefully followed by the different classes, and much interesting work was done.

While struggling with Psychology, Geometry and Cicero, the idea was conceived of producing a work of art, an Annual. As it was the first time an Elk City High School Class had attempted such a thing, it was with fear and trembling that it was attempted.

The Superintendent, Mr. Harder, thought it would be much better to allow the young folks to launch their enterprise in their own way and to make the work characteristic of the class. So aside from some advice the pages of this work are entirely the product of the class built up from the happenings of the year. It represents a contact with the world withn and without; we have tried to show ourselves as others see us and reveal the joys and sorrows of school life by G.E.H.
NOTE: Think G.E.H. is Prof. Geo. E. Harder, Supertintendent
