    Santa Comes to Elk City

Santa arrived in Elk City the last day of school before the holiday vacation, Santa gave sacks of candy to the children. The pre schoolers came with great expectation of seeing Santa and explaining to him what they wanted for Christmas. A couple of little ones thought Santa looked pretty scary even sitting on mom's lap. One of the children ask where Santa's reindeer were while he was visiting Elk City. He explained he had to leave them in the Foster's garage with feed and hay so they could rest. Check here for a look at some of the kids who visited Santa. Pictures of Santa's Visit to Elk City

    Lighting Contest

This years lighting contest was again very popular; the nice fall weather was helpful in letting Elk Citians put up their Christmas displays and lights. There were numerous homes lit up at 6:00 o'clock on December 18th for the judges to observe. It certainly would have been a difficult job trying to pick the top 3 winning homes since so many homes went all out decorating. This year the judges were two young adults along with one older adult doing the judging. It is always good to get the young people involved in community projects.

    Derek Schmidt, Kansas State Senator
    Listening Tour

    Kansas Senator Derek Schmidt

December 10th Elk Citians were invited by our Kansas State Senator Derek Schmidt to attend his annual Listening Tour of 2007. Senator Schmidt was scheduled to be in Elk City at 8:00 a.m. The night before was a rain/sleet/snow mixture. Senator Schmidt arrived on a frigid Monday morning right on time. A nice group was able to come in to the community building contrary to the bad weather. Senator Schmidt tries every year to make the rounds of all the towns in his district, even small ones like Elk City which has a little over 300 citizens, to receive input and solve problems or clarify communication between the state and its citizens. He likes to get the feel of those he represents in Topeka. Several topics were brought up by the Elk Citians: The Water System changes on Dist. #24 Longton and Elk City; K-DOT's denial of a grant which would have helped Elk City fix up and pave their streets; Wild Life and Parks putting up gates to keep people from driving on Public Lands (there was some discussion on some people who were disabled and were unable to walk down to the river to fish, they needed to drive); the problem with deer damaging crops over by Hale Community. It was a good productive meeting and we appreciate Senator Schmidt taking the time to plan these annual tours.

    United Methodist Church Fall Supper

United Methodist Church Fall Supper The annual Fall Supper was started many years ago by the ladies in the UMW to raise money for their mission projects. As time has gone by, the group is smaller (and older!) so it takes the whole church to accomplish the tasks required for the supper now. The men of the church set up the tables and chairs and they help by serving as the cashier and ticket takers. The young people help as servers and with the clearing of the tables. Since everyone serves their own food, it sometimes becomes difficult to carry the plate, along with the dessert plate and the drink, so the young people are necessary helpers. There are many dedicated UMW members who cook the food, help with the serving and cleanup. There are others in the community who volunteer to donate food or help with the supper tasks. A simple 'thank you' is certainly not enough; but the UMW does appreciate the work, donations, and the sacrifice that is made annually by those who participate, and we appreciate the support given us by the community who attend. The profits help the group to accomplish their mission work. United Methodist Women again say "Thanks".

    Christian Church Annual Turkey Supper

Christian Church Turkey Supper The First Christian Church held their annual Turkey Supper in November. A nice crowd attended; you could choose from eating at the church and visiting with friends, or for those unable to get out, church members would deliver to your home. You could go to the church and get a carry out, too. They always serve a beautiful meal and work hard to make it a special occasion.

Woodworking Country Church

wooden church Rocky L. Condon uses his carpentry talents to build a small scale wooden country church. The overall dimensions of the church are 16 1/2" L x 13" W x 32 1/2" H. Mr. Condon used boards ripped from cabinet grade oak. It has a removable roof which shows the inside and a few people in the church. Wooden Church

Smoot Receives Diploma after 50 year delay

Carl Smoot, a resident of Elk City as a child, was 17 years old when his mother signed her consent for him to join the Army in 1948. He was attending high school at Elk Valley.

His division was the first American troops to land in Korea at the start of the war. He was sent to the front lines as a Radio Communicator, laying lines to relay messages back to the big guns where they were to aim their fire at the enemy.

Mr. Smoot, was shot through the chest in a battle near Won Son Korea, sent to a hospital in Tokyo, Japan; recovered and sent back to the front lines. He was given his Honorable Discharge after becoming sick with Malaria in 1952.

At the time Carl should have been in school and receiving his high school diploma he was serving his country. Through the efforts of his son and Senator Derek Schmidt, the superintendent of Elk Valley, and one of the board members, a High School diploma was presented to Mr. Smoot at his home in November 2007. A copy of the original diploma presented to his class in 1948 was made and filled in appropriately.

Poets Corner

by Mildred Brashier

Busy days in Bethlehem
Every room was full
They came for census taking
Excitement knew no lull
Families gathered; news was shared
Children, slightly awed
Nights were cold, they sought their beds
No one roamed abroad

Then Joseph came with Mary
And in the stable laid
This precious Holy mother
Straw pillows for her head
No one saw the star that night
Though it proclaimed the birth
Of tiny baby Jesus
The Savior of the Earth

Only shepherd in the fields
Were told the great good news
By angels in a heavenly choir
The lowly - tending ewes
No one Knew - or would have cared
Another child was born
But all mankind was blessed
On that Holy Christmas night
