In early November, 2002, four truckloads of steel were delivered to Goessel from Sioux Falls, SD. The steel had been fabricated into large sections that were welded together to form the base cone, the center pedestal and the tank. On Veterans Day, November 11, 2002, a crew of welders from the contractor, Macquire Iron of Sioux Falls, began putting these pieces together. The base cone was made out of six sections that had been formed and welded. Two 7' X 30' rolled and welded sections make up the center pedestal that was put together on the ground. The tank was also assembled on the ground while resting on railroad ties and outside support legs.
The Building of the Water Tower
On Monday, December 2, 2002, a conventional cable crane with 200' of boom was assembled on Marion Avenue to hoist the pedestal and tank into place. The following day with overcast skies and temperatures in the upper 20's, these pieces became the new watertower for the City of Goessel. This process took approximately 4 1/2 hours.
The welding crew finished their work on Saturday, December 7. The watertower was sandblasted, cleaned and painted in the spring of 2003.
The new water tower went online in the summer of 2003.
