The Hardtner Public Library was organized October 8, 1913, by a group of citizens, known as the Hardtner Library Association. A membership fee of $1.00 was charged each year and was used to purchase books. The library has had 3 locations the present building being donated by Brad Ohlson.
In 1939, as a project sponsored by the Y.W.C.A, we borrowed 50 books from the Kansas Traveling Library at Topeka. The Y.W.C.A. was instrumental in the purchase of books and remodeling projects. In 1975 a Friends of the Library Group was organized and after it disbanded, through the use of their funds the current Library was remodeled. In 1991 we received the Outstanding Small Public Library Award. .
SELECTION
The library has a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books. One may choose from over 13,500 titles ranging from current best sellers to a rare old favorite. The library has a variety of children's and educational videos. There are 3,656 titles available.
SERVICE
As a member of the South Central Kansas Library System we have many services available to us. One may inter-library loan any book you wish through the use of an on line catalog. Public access to the Internet is available as well as OCLC. The book Van comes every 2 months and allows us to choose 250 different books. We also provide talking books to the visually impaired and mail-a-book services for the home bound. Story Hour is once a month for children 3 through 12 years of age. A summer Reading Program is held each year, for all children with a week of educational activities ending with a party in August. The South Central Kansas Library System also provides continuing education for Librarians and Trustees. The Library is financed through taxes, grants, and gifts from organizations and patrons.
