Inman is located in southwestern McPherson, [MP], county. Highway K-61 and the railroad tracks form the northwestern boundary of Inman; grain elevators dominate that side of town. The landscape around Inman is flat; much of the area was once covered with shallow lakes. Drainage canals emptied most of them, but Lake Inman survives as the largest natural lake in Kansas.

History
The Santa Fe trail passed a couple of miles north of Inman bringing travelers from the east through the area. Major Henry Inman, surveying the area for the Army, first described Lake Inman. Originally called "Aiken" when it was platted in 1887, the town was renamed for the lake in 1889.
| Things to See | The museum complex in the downtown area has a museum building, an
old (1906) telephone office, and the old depot.
Lake Inman, the largest natural lake in Kansas, is home to thousands of waterfowl. The Stan Herd mural in downtown (shown above) shows the artist's vision of how Inman might have looked in 1910. Local legend has it that Sinkhole Sam, a mysterious creature called locally a "foopengerkle" (possibly genetically related to the Loch Ness monster), lives in the Big Sinkhole south and east of town. Sometimes in the fall there are on display big round bales of hay that have been cleverly and creatively decorated. The white frame home of Dr. Graves at Center & Locust is a still gracious example of Kansas architecture. In the little park next to the bank is the grave of Inman Sam, (1976-1990), the town cat. He "worked" at the grain elevator and slept in whatever downtown business he chose. | |
