The Museum of the Great Plains offers permanent and temporary exhibits year round on a variety of subjects demonstrating Wichita County's rich pioneer heritage. The building itself is a wonderful example of native limestone construction. It was built as a WPA project in 1940 using stone quarried just north of the county. Hours: 1:00 - 5:00 Tuesdays through Fridays 2:00 - 5:00 Saturdays & Sundays Exhibits: The School House exhibit allows children to see a school like the ones their great-grandparents attended. The 1893 Post Office from Marienthal, the first one in Wichita county, is on display. The General Store shows the vast array of staples and hardware available. The Millinery Shop was outfitted entirely by one person's collection of old hats. The bank exhibit features antique (late 1800's) teller counters from the First State Bank of Leoti. The museum boasts one of the largest private collection of violins in Kansas. Uniforms from all of the country's wars are on display. A display of cattle brands and saddles shows Wichita county's ranching heritage. The display of early modes of transportation includes a real chuckwagon. Historical Society The Wichita County Historical Society meets at 7:30 P. M. on the last Tuesday of each month.
