Sore-N-HighHere in this small rural community of Sabetha, KS, located in NE Kansas, we have a group of cyclists, who have dedicated themselves for the last decade in helping The Eastern Kansas Branch of the Mid America Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Headquartered in Topeka, Kansas. Beginning back in 1990 this group started with one person, this lone person participated in the MS150 on a dare, a dare that he couldn’t finish a ride of 150 miles. Well needless to say he did. Since then, the group has grown annually. In the previous year (2000) the group recruited a total of 36 cyclists, willing to participate in the MS150 September Tours. The best thing about what this group has accomplished is the fact, that they have raised over $45,000 since the founding of the group. An accomplishment the Community can be proud of. Anyone who would like to join this worthwhile organization or just likes to cycle is welcome. It’s a great way to stay fit, doesn’t cost a lot of money, not unless you want it to. You can train by yourself or train with a friend, but please train, it will definitely help, especially if you intend to do the MS150. If you would like to know more about the ride, or our Sore-N-High Team, here is a partial list of riders you can contact, I’m sure they could tell you a lot about the MS150. Captain – Roger Young, Martin Mishler, Gregg Wenger,
Melinda Wenger, Teresa Deckinger, Kelly Girton, Dave Nachtigal, John Sheeran.
The first 6 live in the Sabetha area and Dave and John live in the Hiawatha
area. This Topeka Chapter serves people with MS and their families in a 40 county area of Eastern Kansas. Their purpose is to raise funds to support research efforts, provide services for those with multiple sclerosis and their families, and to educate the general public, as well as the professional community, about the disease and the needs of people with MS. Services they provide for people with MS through the
Eastern Kansas Branch and Mid America Chapter include: limited emergency
financial assistance, counseling, educational programs, social interaction, self
help groups, advocacy, equipment loan and more. The Information and Resource Center, located in the Branch and Chapter offices, contains educational materials regarding symptoms, treatments and developments in MS research. These pamphlets are available free to people with MS, their friends and family members on request. They are also available to service organizations and professionals. Books, audio tapes and video cassettes are loaned to individuals as well as self-help groups.
